I was bumped even with the platinum level though! I have never been bumped by UA or CO after reaching elite status even when they have had to resort to bumping and with me arriving just 20 minutes before departure (pre 9/11).

As for your second example, that hardly seems like my experience. People who get pulled for secondary screening don't get on the jetway until the plane is ready for boarding, and in general are allowed to jump to the head of the line as soon as they are cleared.

And if you're not happy with the extra security, I suggest you contact the FAA to let them know you are annoyed. AA is merely carrying out the appropriate security provisions.</font>

What is common in all of these bad experiences with AA is that there seemed to be very little individual initiative or common sense steps taken by the ground staff to make it just a little more bearable for the traveller especially when things go slightly awry or there are exceptions. This can be alleviated by hiring good staff but no airline has a monopoly on hiring good staff. It is the corporate culture and management practices that translate to this attention to detail. AA almost feels like a government-owned airline (shudder!)

I am a very loyal AA Platinum member. I have to select the lowest fare at my compnaie so I fly at some weird hours and far away locations just so I can use them.
I have to agree, the service at AA seems to be lacking. When you call the Platinum desk, they are 70% (in my experience) annoyed and not very willing to go out of thier way. Front desk people never want to help. However, people in the Admiral's Club's are great!!
I agree that they are using this 9/11 thing to cut corners at our expense. I bought an Admirals club memebrship and they closed Honlulu, Houston, Phoenix and one other that I cant think of. That doesnt leave too many for me here in the West to use.
I also find the fact that if you are Gold or Platinum on CO, you are most likely to bein in a first class seat. In american I have to use my earned upgrades. 1 or 2 short round trip flights wipes them out so I am in coach most of the time as Platinum. Someone mentioned that in a previous post that Platinums get upgraded? I am guessing you are refeering to using your earned upgrades. If not, please let me know how to do this.
