My experience has been that non-AFA guys often give Academy grads good-natured grief about going to the "Zoo" and for putting up with 4 years worth of cr*p in what's very close to being an all-boys school when one can earn a commission by going the ROTC route in a "normal" college or by going to OTS and getting a commission in only 90 days.

That being said, if that young man really wants to fly I'd definitely steer him to the USAF - not because I'm saying that the AFA is better than Annapolis as they both have outstanding reputations or that USAF aviation is necessisarily better than that of the Navy - but because the USAF has a reputation of treating their people MUCH better than the other services (and because he will have a 0% chance of ever spending even a single minute on a boat). Ask any servicemember which branch of the service treats their people best and I'm very confident they will tell you Air Force...

USAF -- definitely agreed. I've seen many examples of AF treating their people better than the others. Flying is definitely fun in the AF. But, in all actuality, since the services are all so different -- you really must go after what you feel is the best for you (you're the one that has to deal with the particular military environment for X years).

BTW -- spent a few years at Travis and loved every minute. Also spent some time in Benecia for dinner, festivals, etc -- its a beautiful area.

I've seen many of you come up with increadible prices for mileage runs. My question is how do you find those. I'm closest to ELM.

Is there a site that gives great fares out of specific airports?

Thanks,

Have you tried travelocity's dream maps? You set it for your home airport, then it gives you rates all over the world from there.

~gently nudging the thread back onto topic~

welcome zoom, you'll find a lot of good advice here.

remember, the only stupid question is one that i can't answer!

that being said, ELM probably isn't going to be a good departure city for you on mileage runs. is there any other service besides US?

in your area, i'd look at BUF and ROC as departure cities. I've found that the trick is to look for sales on Southwest, and watch for your carrier of choice match the fare.

watch for WN to offer sales from BUF, and for B6 (jetblue) to offer sales from both BUF and ROC. pick a city pair they serve (for example BUF-LAS), and do a search for an airfare on the airline you prefer.

happy hunting!
