More Room In Overhead Bins?

With the new one carry-on and one personal item rule, has anyone noticed a lot more room in overhead bins lately?

I'm traveling this weekend and for the first time in months, I have been waitlisted for an upgrade. Whether or not it clears, being one of the last paxs to board makes me wonder if there will be enough room in the overhead bins for my carry-on.

Yes, I've noticed there is more room in the overhead bins.

I'm guessing it's got as much to do with the absence of scared discretionary travelers (maybe one or two more trips than T-Giving, or XMas - you know, the ones who have seat assignment "57K" and are stopping to check every row number, starting from "1") as it does with the hand-carry rules.

Suits me fine. By the time I get done dealing with the dolts at security, the last thing I want to deal with is lack of overhead space. I'm in JES GET THE HELL OUTTA MY WAY mode these days.

I haven't noticed any extra availability, so I still have to try and board first, even though I'm usually in first since so many people way in the back put the bags up front.

I was on a DL 757 transcon a few weeks ago and couldn't anything within a few rows of my seat (4B or something) after being detained for a security check. The 757 has first class in the front (after you 'turn left') depending on how they park the plane, so it was filled with luggage from that cabin, too.

Ah, jeez. I thought this post was about the new bins on AA...have only been on Fokkers and MD-80's, so haven't seen them yet.

First flight out of DFW on Mon morning is full of roller-boards. Business travelers aren't afraid to carry on all of their bags...me included.

You're right. I've noticed a distinct lack of folks who don't have a clue about flying these days. Well, not really. They're in the Southwest line.

Not mine, thank God!

When we flew over Thanksgiving, I noticed there was a ton of extra space in the overhead bins around us (though not on the entire plane). I think it helped that they were the bigger wheels first bins, which hold much more, but both the bin above us and the two on the other side had no luggage at all in them, just jackets, and there was not one empty seat on the plane.

People are carrying less, at least some people, while others are instead bringing their six year olds with them to carry on their kitchen sink.

I spilled my coffee, thanks to you! I must have experienced this a million times but never really thought about it until I read your post. Now, I can picture it vividly in my mind.

not being a plane expert, I can not tell you which planes, BUT most of the newer (I know, big help) planes allow for the wheeled luggage to be placed side to side which takes up quite a bit less space.

Most travellers still have not picked up on this and I get many evil eyes as I rearrange luggage so that many more can fit in.

New carry on rule: Take your item. Hold it with three fingers with your arm fully extended for 30 seconds. If you can't do it, then you have to check it. Either that or seat the people with little carry on or people who look agressive enough that they won't fiddle around in the front of the plane and people with three baby strollers, 4 bags, etc in the back. I love kids, I just don't like sitting in 34A and wating 45 minutes while people struggle to get their bag out. A carry on for a 250 lb 25 year old man is very differnet than a carry on for a 75 yr old 100 lb woman. I guess there really is no solution without stepping on toes. God bless.

Coming back from the DFW FT get-together in September I was in an AA S80 with the new overhead bins. I made a comment (I had been anxious to see how they magically "found" more space up there) to the FC FA who was standing right in front of my bulkhead FC seat as I was putting my rolling bag in the long way instead of sideways. She barely acknowledged me, so I knew what kind of service was to come for that flight.

I think they've curtailed the plans to roll it out on most/all of their planes. When the planes are only half full, you've automatically doubled your overhead space.

Have to love the bins with little pictures so that people can know that they can put it in wheels first, you would think all that extra space when they don't would be a hint.

i'm batting very low on ba w/ my carry on. they have made me check it 5 out of 6 times this year because of a "x" kilo max rule. no problem w/ other a/l's. the larger bins are great - get 3 in where 2 fit before. great for the roll aboards [ wife calls them "pull toys"].

Some of them are migrating back. I had at least a dozen of them on my pre-Thanksgiving DFW-LGA flight.

How did I recognize them?

They were the dozen folks who decided to ignore the numbers on their boarding cards and just take seats wherever they darned well felt like it.

We pushed back fifteen minutes late because of all the drama involved in reseating everyone. I partially blamed the FAs who, when discovering a person in a wrong seat, merely said "oh, can you find another seat?" to the other passenger. What was worse was that these "seat poachers" had grabbed seats in the first five rows of coach where elites were not willing to go to the back to take someone's center seat.

i've always found it ironic that CO includes the information about storing your bags "wheels first" in the safety demo, well after the bins are closed. it doesn't seem to be in any pre-flight or boarding announcements...

I've heard CO FA's make a PA about the bigger bins accepting roll-ons wheels first during boarding.
