I haven't noticed any extra availability, so I still have to try and board first, even though I'm usually in first since so many people way in the back put the bags up front.

I was on a DL 757 transcon a few weeks ago and couldn't anything within a few rows of my seat (4B or something) after being detained for a security check. The 757 has first class in the front (after you 'turn left') depending on how they park the plane, so it was filled with luggage from that cabin, too.
