Expedia special fare - beware!

Expedia special fare - beware!
Just gotten off the phone with Expedia.
I'm trying to find out the rules about the "Expedia Special Fare" ticket LHR-YYZ-ORD return with UA. It's Ł294 all in.
I can't get the rules more than an abreviated version of them.
Talking to an agent at Expedia I'm told that the ONLY way to get the rules is if I purchase the ticket. So, if I then find out I get 0 miles, can't change the ticket even for a fee etc, then I'm stood with a ticket that is 100% useless to me.
So the agent tries to get the rules for me - however, it turns out she can't unless she has the fare basis. And the only way to get the fare basis is ..... yup, you guessed it. Me purchasing the ticket and then telling her what the fare basis is.
Has anyone actually flown on these fares and did you manage to collect your miles? Could you change the ticket for a fee?
I'm debating of wether I should bitethe bullet and book the flight or go with a fare that is Ł150 (50%) more than the special fare.

Is this something that is unique to expedia.co.uk? I've never had problems getting fare rules from the US site without buying a ticket - in fact, since it was the only one that gave routing rules as part of the fare rules, it's the only place I go to get the rules.
