If it's like in past years, they give you a reference (payment) number to add to your paper 1040 when you send it in.

I do not recall any reference # that you have to put on your paper return. When you pay, you do provide all the necessary information including your ss# and/ or Tax ID #

Hi Guys,

I had full intentions of paying with my Charles Schwab 2% card on payusatax to not have access to that 2% for the month while I pay it; however, I just spoke with customer service and they informed me the transaction would be deemed a cash advance transaction thus imposing additional fees to the transaction from FIA's end. So I started thinking does Citi have the same rules. I had to call Citi regarding a membership fee anyways which by the way was waived for $1000 in spend for 3 months. The call with Citi the csr had to ask her supervisor and they confirmed that tax payments are considered cash transactions since it is for a balance owed. So wow... that kinda changes everything as far as paying for points.

Once that was said and done I figured I'd give ole Amex Plat a call and see what they had to say about the charges and if they had any promos running (they didn't). They said since the card is a charge card and the bill is due at the end of each month then the transaction will not be considered a cash equiv transaction. It's unfortunate because I will have to pay a higher transaction rate for the Amex transaction at pay1040 or officialpayments; however, I will be receiving triple points after my first 3k charge and since I will not be charged any crazy cash equiv fees this seems like the more attractive option.

Anyone else want to chime in on these fees from Citi or FIA Schwab 2%?

BTW, Schwab did offer a 0% balance transfer up until November, but I have zero experience with balance transfers and she said it takes a few days for the money to hit your account.

Didn't you also asked the same question in this thread? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...l#post13755425

Check Flyrtalk rulles. Double posting is not permitted.

Yes I did double post for maximum exposure for people interested in the matter before the quickly approaching deadline.

My apologies though, I did not know it was against the rules.

Cheers!

My Citi payment last year was treated as a regular purchase through the DirectPayment site.

I just glanced through entire 34 pages and didn't find an answer suitable for me or maybeI could've missed it.

1. If I estimate my 2009 taxes and if it turned out I will get refund as oppose to tax liability. Can I still overpay my tax using cc and expecting a refund from IRS?

2. If the above is true, is there a max amount I can overpay? Say $1mil if I have the $ and if cc company agrees?

3. Will overpaying draw any attention to IRS?

4. If I overpay now, do I have to wait until next April after filing my tax return to get the refund or can I get refund in few weeks from now?

Thx!

If you got a million to overpay your taxes, for what, to get miles on a credit card, what is the offset in lost interest or other returns on that kind of capital?

INteresting questions...I only know partial answers, so I'm going to refrain from answering.

LH2004 Aug 11, 2010 10:10 pm

$1 million is no problem. But if you make it $2 million, then you've got a problem: you can't get your money until your file has gone to the Joint Committee on Taxation. See section 6405.

Hi5z Aug 11, 2010 11:07 pm

So any amount under $2mil should be fine? Say I make an overpayment of $200,000 now eventhough I know I will get tax refund for this year, that'll be ok for IRS and they'll generously refund me the whole $200,000 to my bank account and I still get to keep the 200,000 Starwood Points?
