Well, taxes are done and I owe a boatload this year. C'mon Chase (or anyone else), make it a good one to ease the pain.

Hmmm, not looking good for what has been a most excellent way to accrue large numbers of UA miles, that is the Chase Visa "double miles" for tax payments option. The offer has run on-and-off over the past 2 years, sometimes with caps and sometimes without (the greatest!!!) It was on the website (see "payyourtaxes" link below) for the 4th quarter of 2007 and supposed to be through 12/31/07, but then it disappeared on or before 12/30/07, with only an invitation on the webpage to "come back soon." Today, the "pay your taxes" deal there is no deal at all, just the "opportunity" to use the credit card to pay taxes with a 2.49% "convenience fee." Thanks, but no thanks.
Yesterday, I was on the phone with a Chase CSR who seemed well-informed and said that in 2008 it was likely that Chase would target henceforth their "double miles" for tax payment offers. If this non-BIS mileage opportunity with the card goes away, the card will be a lot less valuable to me. |
pay your taxes 2008
Well, here we are in 2008 and Tuesday (January 15) is the due date for quarterly tax payments, and no double-miles for paying your taxes from Chase. (No one has received a target offer, have they?) I believe one was in place this time, though won't swear to it at the moment. (Maybe scrolling back in this lengthy thread will tell me whether that was or wasn't the case one year ago.)
The question is whether the offer will be repeated for the big tax date, that is April 15. I imagine that if there is to be one, and again, I earnestly hope there will be, Chase will announce it no more than a month from now, that is by mid-February, or March 1 at the latest. Miles at 1.245 cpm may not be quite as wonderful as manna from heaven, but it is pretty good, and I will miss the opportunity terribly if it goes away. |

I have been scrolling around and searching the couple of CCs I'd want to use, and can't find anything. Unfortunately for me, my 4th Q ES is my big payment this year, not the 1040 payment in April.

If you'd accelerated the payment and made it prior to 12/31/07, you could have had 10K + 10K with the Chase card before you capped out on the double miles.

Anybody else shorted on the Second Voucher 2007 period program. That was the promo capped at 4000 bonus miles. My tax payment was made 6/12/07.
I just received my statement and was credited properly, 4000 bonus miles. My wife also received the bonus which was 500 miles when it should have been 3500 miles. Any advise as to how to follow up on this? |

I had a $25K payment (50K miles) last year on April 15th, and looking like about the same this year. Even 1-for-1 wouldn't be so bad given the increase in fuel surcharges etc (and subsequent loss of good mileage-run opportunities at < 2cpm) the past year. |
Nothing at www.chasepayyourtaxes.com about a double miles offer this year, which is discouraging, though consistent with what a Chase CSR suggested would happen this year when we spoke a couple of months ago. Wanted to look back through this thread to see when we started talking here about tax payment offers in 2006 and 2007. Can see that thread began in mid-February 2006 and we were soon going back and forth about the great opportunity this uncapped offer represented, continuing that conversation through 2006, with double miles in effect the entire year. Then it appears that in 2007 there was a post in January of the year followed by a "silent" period until December 2007, that is 11 months, when there were a few more posts. I don't know if that reflects a fall off in interest among FTers, perhaps because Chase cut things back with severe caps except around April 15th, or something else. Anyway, no choice but to wait and see what, if anything, is announced over the course of the next month. (I think if there is to be an offer for April 15 purposes, it must be made no later than March 1, maybe March 15 at the very latest.)
Other thoughts? No one has received a targeted pay-your-taxes offer, have they? |
The Official Payments website (www.officialpayments.com) has a "special offers" section. If one goes there and looks under "Visa," they will see mention of double miles for payments of state and property taxes (no mention of federal taxes). There is nothing more to confirm that there is in fact such a promo currently, and I don't see anything on the Chase website about it, which makes it seem dubious.

Does paying the 2.49% 'convenience fee' for federal taxes thru the credit card really make earning the miles/points worth it (assuming there are no 2x offers from credit card)? Again, you all are far more experienced calculating miles values than I am...say your tax payment is $1,000 (keeping it simple) - you pay $1024.90 for the 1,000 miles/points. And, if I understand it correctly, you cannot 'deduct' that 2.49% amount from next year's taxes as 'tax prep' fees, or 'interest paid'...it's just a fee. So is this really a good method of getting miles/points...or is it just a way to get miles/points that you would not otherwise get and are willing to pay a 'premium' to obtain. (All on the basis that there are no 'bonus miles/points offers, of course.) Thanks for your insights.

Just to keep it simple, lets say your tax bill was $100,000 and you charged it to a SPG Amex. Because you're way over the former 5K limit let's just say that basically you do not get your 2X points. So 100K SPG= 125K Air Miles = 1 Award F ticket = $2500 So tell me if you think it's worth it to pay $2500 K for transoceanic F. And if it were double points...? Of course it goes back to the old I'd never pay that much for a flight argument if it were an out of pocket expense but it's F right... Scho |
