need a math whiz
As I only fly for leisure or with my husband on business how do I figure the first available day to ticket with miles? I want to fly 10/14/02 return 10/26/02. I'm sure that there must be a formula or a math geek out there. Thanks

Add five days to get to the end of the month, which is 10/31/01, and 360 days out.
330 days out would be 30 days beyond that, or 11/30/01.
So there's your rule: go back exactly a year (using 366 if the period contains a 2/29), then add days to get to the last day of the month, then add days to the start of the next month get to 330.

You need to find 330 days before the day you want to go.
There are 365 days in a year. 365 minus 330 is 35 days. There are seven days in a week, so that is five weeks.
Take the day you want to go, look at a calendar, and go five weeks forward.
That is the date you can reserve tickets for, only a year earlier.
They may make you wait until it's 330 days from your return flight, but it's worth a shot.

I have heard from time to time that people book a year out and always wondered how you could plan you life that far ahead. Guessing I am the crazy one here. By the way, other than to some strange places, I can ALWAYS get my tickets a month out, sometimes a week.. like next week to the SC beach. When I say always, sometimes I have to take an earlier or later in the day flight, but schedule usually no a problem.

Thanks to all. I knew that there must be formula or an easy way. To answer about booking so far ahead, we want to use miles to upgrade to first class and my husband already knows what medical meetings are scheduled and the ones he will attend. We are very used to scheduling ahead. Some patients book ahead 6-9 months out for visits so we are very aware of calendars.

90% of the time I will agree with you, but there are times that you have to make the reservations that far in advance. The Ham radio Convention in Dayton every year for example, wait a day or two and the rooms are gone. Medical conferences, cruise days, Comdex or NAB in Vegas, all require you to book on the first day the bookings are available, or you may not get anything.

In todays turbulent times all bets are off (read the current Forbes article on the odds of airlines going belly-up).
You would get better and more accurate answers if you stated the airline(s) you intend to fly on as well as the to/from cities. You already listed your dates.
