According to the wiki HSBC charges a 1% conversion fee for all overseas withdrawals and at least $1/transaction for withdrawals from non-HSBC ATMs. So presumably you would only be charged the 1% if you used your card at HSBC-owned ATMs. But you should verify with your local bank before you travel.

There are plenty of smaller banks that charge 0-1% for withdrawals at any compatible ATM overseas, however. So I wouldn't open an HSBC account just because there are HSBC branches in Oz (although if you're traveling there regularly, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have as a backup).

From my Citibank statement issued today:
Foreign Transactions (Point of Sale, ATM, and Other transactions):
Effective December 2nd, 2006, we will impose a transaction charge equal to 3% of
the transaction amount (including credit and reversals) for each transaction
(U.S. or foreign currency) that you conduct outside the 50 United States or Puerto
Rico other than cash withdrawals at Citibank ATMs, which will not be subject to a
transaction charge.

So why all the advertising for CITI

If you ever been to SYD all the jetways have large CITIBANK advertisements on them, yet there is only one Citibank branch in Australia according to their website.

There are a few more than that:

But what I haven't been able to find is a list of Citibank ATMs in Australia...

Well if the press release is to be believed, supposedly there are now at least 66 CitiBank ATMs in Australia:

http://www.citigroup.com/citigroup/p...05/051212b.htm

with a goodly number of the ATMs located in Westfield shopping centers.

I looked at the Citi web site. It appears that it is not too reliable in locating Citi ATMs. Don't they know where they are?

The previous poster's are correct in saying to specifically go to the Citibank web site for the country in question. For example Chile:

http://www.citibank.cl/chile/laclgl/...ces/atmdir.htm

I also uncovered a banking relationship between Citibank Chile and another entity within Chile and will explore if these additional ATMs will be considered "Citibank ATMs" for Citibank USA purposes when the day comes.

Regards

Commerce Bank, which seems to be a Northeast/Mid-Atlantic bank, absorbs the 1% Visa fee, so charging on their card offers a commission-free foreign transaction.

I couldn't find the info about the fee on their web application. How did you find out?

That is true. I've used it abroad and gotten the true rate. Check them out at www.commerceonline.com
