Advice on Travel card

I have a Visa at my local bank with a balance of $4,000 rate of 13.9%. I'm looking at transferring the balance to a miles card??
I fly UAL (1) then AA with an occasional flight on Delta. What card gives me the best value? Amex, Visa, Discover, Dinners? What program?

Welcome to FlyerTalk, thommsf!

In general most mileage credit cards do not give you miles for balance transfers. But it is still a good idea to switch cards so that all your future purchases do earn miles.

You can look also in the specific airline fora (UA, AA, etc.) for more specific discussions on credit cards.

IMO the best value really depends on what's important to you: the interest rate matters if you carry a balance (as you appear to do), the annual fee, of course, plus the number of bonus miles you get for signing up, whether it's important to you to have flexibility regarding how to redeem your hard-earned points (like with Diner's Club) or whether you're happy earning all your bonus miles on one airline.

If UA is your #1 airline, you might look at the UA Platinum Visa. I just signed up, and got 5,000 bonus miles plus a couple of UA coupons, plus they waived the $60 fee for the first year, plus the usual mile per dollar spent. That isn't an exceptional package, but it's OK. I got info about it from a link at http://www.ual.com

Good luck!

IMHO.... If I were you, I wouldn't be concerning myself about the miles.. I would be concerning myself about paying off that negative debt.. That's my US$0.02 worth

Follow these simple steps:

1) Cut up card
2) Pay off balance
3) Obtain a charge card, so you have no choice but to pay it off in full each and every month.. (i.e., American Express, Diner's Club)..

But to answer your question, I do not think there is a card that is offered who will give miles for balance transfers. Otherwise, you would have people with US$30K in credit card debt transferring their balances, and really reaping the benefits of living on fantasy island

Welcome to FT thommsf! It is about time you found this place. It is a wonderful site, please do enjoy it.

By the way thommsf you have a really good friend that could answer this question for you. I think perhaps from now on you will turn to FT for airline and mileage info.

Southwest Airlines Visa still offers Rapid Reward credits on balance transfers up to $5,000, made within 90 days of opening the account ($1,000 = 1 credit, and 16 credits = 1 r/t flight). You'll also get 4 credits upon approval of the new account. See http://www.iflyswa.com for details.

Do your research. The following sites sum up all of the information you are looking for and can provide recommendations depending on what you consider most important- low interest on transfers, no annual fee, affinity points, etc..

Remember that opening and closing accounts stirs a lot of activity in your credit file and works against you. Good luck and happy hunting.
