RIP: Walmart gift cards!!!

This week has been a double whammy for me, first I find out that CO is history and now wal-mart has issued new bar-coded gift cards that cannot be cashed out under any circumstances.

Oh, the horror!

Even in California? (or other states where the law insists on that option being available?)

Yes. Cards have been re-printed and cannot be cashed out.

The description clearly states they are, quoting:

Not returnable or refundable for cash except in states where required by law

So you may still be OK in those states.

From my reading of other treads, it seems it would depend on the clerks and local stores if you can cash out, giving your residing state allows it to start with. In Central TX, I'd kindly asked the local WalMart clerks about cashing out their GCs, I was firmly told 'no way.'

I was told by walmart that i could not get a credit for the card I had bought- we emailed each other back and forth to no avail. I finally told them that i had used a card to buy a money order and as they were not letting me do that again I felt I should be credited the $2500, as i could not do what I wanted to do with the gift card. They finally agreed and credited my account. So polite persistency does pay off sometimes.

We don't make the rules, we follow them (possibly a little too literally).

Given that the Wal-Mart scheme actually broke rules, I'd have to disagree with this.

The cashiers hate to scan them at all puchases and at Sam's Clubs, sometimes they are a real pain in the (you know where) because some of the registers won't work with the scanning and they have to enter the code manually twice. Becoming a major pain just to earn miles the legit way.

Yes, poor Wal-Mart. They're really hurting. I don't know how a mom-and-pop operation like that manages to survive with all us no-gooders out here.

Cool It was good while it lasted...

...at least I got ~$6000.00 cashed out (in a drawn-out scheme covering southern California and the Central Valley) before I realized what a pain it was...

I actually asked to cash out a legitimate cash card last weekend that was only around $90 and was informed that they received a memo and were no longer permitted to do it.

No problemo in San Diego

Went into a WalMart in San Diego, told them I lived in WA and was on vacation in SAN, and needed some money orders to pay bills. The clerk checked with the manager who told her I could buy a shopping card with my Amex card and use it for money orders as long as the transactions were on different days. I also confirmed the shopping card was refundable if the scheme didn't work.

So, purchased the shopping card Friday ($1510), went back Monday, got a different clerk, who proceeded to cash out my shopping card and sell me two money orders.

No problemo ........
