Airlines start fall sales early

Most US airlines said Tuesday that they will cut some fares by about 25 percent into December, trying to ensure that the strong traffic levels seen in recent months will continue into what is typically a slower fall travel season.

Stupid question... if I booked an economy seat two weeks ago... nonrefundable... and it is now $50 cheaper... can I get the lower fare or am I tied into my original ticket? It is paid for....

Just wondering.

Thanks

William

wharvey, while they won't refund the difference, they may offer you a credit which you can apply for a future trip. That's my experience when I've purchased a ticket only to discover it was later reduced in price.

NOTICE:

Bestfares has yet to post this sale. They only advise of their own deals. My surmise still stands: Bestfares isn't giving us the best fares, especially "snooze alarms," as in the past.

I second this-- they really are slacking.

I wonder if there are new people there who don't know a lot about the airlines. I've seen some big mistakes in the info they give recently.

I read the Southwest Press Release annoudcing the fares-- I'm surprised they didn't make a single Freedom/4th of July reference. I was half-expecting a $198 anywhere sale to start soon after the 4th of July....

Wharvey, some airlines will also charge you the change fee (typically $75) to re-ticket you at the lower fare. If the fee is less than the savings, you're out of luck and even if the savings are larger you'll lose most of it to the fee (but still worth doing just to avoid leaving the airline with that last $15 ).

I've only had lower fares with AA and I have never been charged the $75 change fee - always given a voucher for the credit. There has to be availability for the exact routing and flights that you are booked on, but available with the lower fare.

Yeh, $158 if you want to travel on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. Leaving from the east coast on a Saturday means taking 2 days off so you can return on a Tuesday. Not so great, in my view.

I, too, noticed the unadvertised sale on several airlines. Currently, Continental is honoring most of the Southwest routes--just take a look at their website. $209 to almost anyplace Southwest flies (and is offering their sale fares) This is great news for those of us in the hinterlands--we rarely get great sales like this.

Speaking of Bestfares (I'm a member also)---I am still expecting my July issue of their magazine. I always receive it late ( 5 or six days), but this is a new record. By the time I receive the current magazine (if I do), most of the info will be outdated. Their magazine is glossy but its late delivery is a big disappointment.
