I've found www.quikbook.com to have the best rates, though their selection in some cities can be slim or non-existent.

Sounded like a good tip. I just tried to book a LAX airpiort hotel for SEPTEMBER 17th, and a pop up came on saying "there is not enough lead time - please phone us"!
