Abbreviations and Acronyms

HELP! I am new to this forum and I can't even read half the messages because of a plethora acronyms and abbreviations! While I know _some_ of them ORD, IAD, and MCI, I have yet to memorize every freakin airport and airline in thw world! Where can I go to get a list!

Mac

Go to www.ual.com and log in as a guest, then go to Plan an Itinerary. You will then see a section that says "City Codes" or "Airport Codes". Open one of these and then reduce it so that it sits at the bottom of your screen all the time. Then you can simply look at it when you see an airport abbreviation you don't recognize.

I've been on FlyerTalk at least a year and a half and I certainly don't know them all either. Sometimes I even intentionally put down the wrong one, just to be ornery.

Macbravery -

Welcome! If you're reading a post and you can't figure out what the abbreviations mean, call the person on it! A lot of times it's just because the person's lazy (I can say this b/c I'm really bad about it - see?).

If you don't start memorizing them how will you pass the 90 day quiz?

It's not just the airport codes. I find more use of acronymic (is that a word) initials than other places in life. For example, IMHO clearly means "in my humble opinion", but I don't think I'd ever seen this anywhere before and I'm not really sure how I figured it out, except from context.
macbravery, I'd just say hang in there, and it will make more sense with time.

It's quite thoughtless to be using jargon, acronyms, colloquilisms and obscure Americanisms on a board aimed at a global audience, many of whom are not native English speakers.

At least, that is what I tell myself each and every time I do it.

Continuing with the thread....airline nicknames assigned by ATC... I have heard a few of them but was wondering if anyone knew of others:

Speedbird/British Airways
Cactus/America West
Critter/ValuJet

Geez, I am such an airline geek.....help!

I was in Nepal in March, and flew Buddha Airlines! And another major one there was I swear called YETI Air!

So it won't be confused with Air China of PRC.

An airline geek... you're not alone.

http://www.learnthenet.com/english/index.html

You can search for just about any acronym used online there.

For airport codes, google can be a huge help, just put in the airport code and search.

I have no problem with prople using acronyms as long as they are fairly standard ones that are easy to find if I don't already know them.
