Here's my game plan now that I passed the 10,000 Marriott point threshold. I don't stay at Marriott properties (I'm an InterContinental and Hilton kinda guy) so saving the points for hotel stays doesn't have much appeal for me.
Originally, my goal was to convert the 10k points to 2k Alaska miles but that would not be the best bang for the buck.
Instead, I can transfer the 10k points to SPG which will net me 3,333 SPG points. In turn I can transfer them to Virgin America and earn 3,333 Virgin America points. After Jan 9, 2017, I can then transfer those 3,333 points at a 1:1.3 ratio into Alaska, netting me 4,333 miles.
If you have 20k SPG Starpoints to transfer, it gets better as SPG will add a 5k point bonus to the transfer.

Via Marriott Insiders, confirmed that SPG points are subject to immediate expiration if transferred to Marriott and the Marriott account has no qualifying activity in the last 24 months.

There are going to be some frustrated people out there!

Expiration reset FROM Marriott TO SPG
Transfer done 12/20/16 immediately showed that date on account as date of last qualifying activity. However, a few days later the date was moved
back to the prior date of qualifying activity, Therefore, social media tweets or posting may temporarily reset the date, but eventually the system catches up.
