Since I'm fairly recent in the collecting miles thing (since last year), I've got 1 big plan for most of my miles. I'm going to take my mom to Australia for 3 weeks business class courtesy of UA in Jan 2001. I'm also using miles & Starwood points for the PiP in November! BTW, this is a good OMNI thread! Now if there were matchmaking for single guys w/ miles looking for single women w/ miles!

Now that I've started to collect on one airline (NW...close to 300k) I will probably treat myself and g-friend to international upgrades somewhere far away from DC.

Also, plan on giving my twin bro a few free trips back to the states from Europe.

I must say it feels great to be the Samaritan (giving others miles) -- just as long as the well of banked miles doesn't run too dry!

We talk a lot about "getting" miles, but very little about how we plan to use them.
I guess its possible that we are all "a half a bubble off of plumb" and just collect miles to collect miles.
...
But I doubt that is the case with most Webflyer folk. You all appear to be intelligent, sophisticated, logical and (for the most part) sober types, who must have some grand plan. I would love to hear what you do with your miles and where your imaginations go.
Hee hee... I note that Merry has not posted - perhaps he presumed that you weren't addressing him :]

My plans include a trip to Cape Town and the Wine Route next spring... (on BA, of course)

Thank you Bab's.

I have just this minute booked a three night reward stay at the Conrad Hilton in London for 22nd-25th June (Wimbledon fortnight).

It took some doing mind you, they were full, so the Diamond desk had to sort ot out.

Perhaps our very own tennis celebrity Rudi will make an appearance??

As for 'dream trips' I haven't noticed a weeks "drink as much as you can at a Brandy Distillery" on any airlines/hotels reward list!

I tend to save my miles for vacation usage. Last year, I used my miles to take my girlfriend and I to hawaii ( great deal too....it was 55000 miles for two coach tickets on hawaiian airlines using American miles) and this year I am using some contiental miles to go take us to Cancun. I have also used 4 tickets to fly cross country last year. While I love to use my miles to vacation, I have also given away my American VIP2 certificates (upgrades to anywhere American flies) to friends on their honeymoons. I find that people are so grateful for little gifts like that.

Dear Catman

You failed to visit Marvellous Melbourne in your round the world plan!

We Melbournites are terribly offended - particularly that you would choose to visit Sydney before even thinking of Melbourne.

cheers Peter

Dear PBarrett...

How can I forget Melbourne... with that great dining rail car that tours the city while you have dinner, the architecture and the theatre.

I had a better time there then in Sydney actually.

So Maybe for the Fosters leg I'll change to Melbourne.

So far we've done 3 tickets to Hawaii, 1 ticket to California (the other 2 used a free companion ticket), 3 tickets to Antigua, and 2 to Mexico - all on American. Now I'm trying to build enough in my delta, united and continental accounts to have a ticket. Isigned up for Delta's credit card for the free miles. Also just signed up for diner's club - hoping to top off anything I need to with their 12000 bonus miles. A free plane ride is more fun than one I pay for.

We use our (My) points and miles regularly, so I am not really saving for some big huge trip. Among our recent trips:

July 1997 -- Trip for 4 to Seattle, using 2 FF tickets, and a free companion ticket I got by signing up for the Citibank AAdvantage card (which I then cancelled after the flight). I paid for my ticket for the miles.

Nov. 97 -- Trip for 4 to Maui on Delta, using 3 FF tickets (and I paid for mine, for the miles).

March 98 -- 1 ticket on TWA for guys' ski trip to SLC to go to Deer Valley with my buddies.

Sept. 98 -- trip to Chicago for 2 on FF tickets.

April 99 -- trip for 4 to ABQ and then Santa Fe for spring break (trip report in trip forum). 3 FF tickets, and I paid for mine to get the miles.

coming soon -- Nov. 99 -- Trip for 4 to Grand Cayman for a week, using 4 FF tickets with combined AA and US miles, and using a combination of AA and US flights, thanks to the new alliance.

That's exactly why I get the miles, and what I like to use them for.

I don't consider myself a real "frequent" frequent flyer, but I've managed to do fairly well:

A couple of one-way segments in the US on NW
Two coach MIA - PEK, also on NW
Three coach SCL - SAN, on UA
A few inner-Chile trips for my wife, courtesy of UA
One SCL - LAX, this time on LA
Four LIM - SYD, in business on UA

Next up on my agenda are India, Hong Kong, New Zealand or Melbourne. We'll see what happens...

By the summer of 2001 I will have enough miles for a biz class RTW ticket. I plan to quit my job and spend six months on the road.
