You don’t have to fly to KUL. There might be something that’s closer. I think HKG counts as a separate country actually, but I don’t know if there are any CAN-HKG flights.
You could risk “missing” the KUL flight, but I’m not sure if it’s a great idea. The border police officers will verify your booking (in the GDS) when you try to enter the country.

Yes HKG counts as a separate country (for now
) and qualifies for TWOV, I don't definitely don't recommend 'missing' that KUL flight. You don't wanna mess with Chinese border police......

Depends on your nationality if you can do the TWOV (Most EU and North American Nationalities are fine)
plus you need to have a visa for your onward destination Hanoi, or visa waiver or e-visa

The problem is on the way back! You can exit via the train border but not for the entry (TWOV).
You have to fly in Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, Shenzhen Bao'an Airport or Jieyang Chaoshan Airport https://www.travelchinaguide.com/cit...-visa-free.htm
The plane tickets from both HKG and MFM are expensive (~USD150 one way!)
It is better to fly to BKK/DMK and costs about USD100 if you do not want to pay or go to the embassy/consulate for the visa, costs about the same price!
