CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Redeemed 70k AA miles for IAD-DOH-CMB on QR in J. Since I’m a dummy and booked my ex-SGN flight at the end of the Tet new year, I’m going to check out Thailand for a few days instead. CMB-BKK on UL using Avios. Still need to figure out how to get to SGN, but a short AirAsia hop looks like the best option.

Thanks for any help with this.
CX blocks 2A and 2K, which are bassinet seats. OWE can usually get those seats by phone but you could be moved if there is an infant.
In my experience, the other seats are never blocked.

Edit: I think the OW "marketed and operated flight" applies only when you want to access a lounge that is operated by a different OW airline than the marketing/operating carrier. E.g. If lounge is operated by CX, and your ticket is sold by a different OW than CX, and your flight is operated by a non-OW airline, then you won't have lounge access.

In my understanding, as long as the lfight is marketed by CX (or KA), you will have access to CX lounges, regardless of who operates the flight. Now, if you want to get into the QF lounge in HKG, then they won't allow entry with a CX-marketed flight that is operated by VN.
Yes, but Cathay's website is ambiguous in many ways. In no way does it explain the access rules for codeshare flights, which falls into a grey territory. I reiterate, that I do not know if CX has an agreement with VN for lounges in CX, but if they do, then that's good. What I do know is that generally most passengers on non-OW operated CX codeshare flights are not eligible to access the Cathay lounges, regardless of their status or travel class (unless you hold status with MPC), solely because of the departure flight not operated by OW, even with a CX code if no such prior reciprocal lounge agreement has been made.

In F, 2A and 2K is blocked, and not selectable online. When 1A/K is already occupied, and so is 1/2D, then one will not be able to select seats online, and instead the system will prompt an error statement. The same happens when there are more passengers without seats selected, and tries to assign seats online, but there are not enough open/unblocked seats. For instance, 2 passengers in booking, but only 1D is open, the error prompt will come up again.

Does not necessarily mean that the flight is overbooked, you will most likely be placed at 2A/2K at check in.

Im not sure exactly what you’re talking about but you CAN get assigned 2A or 2K, or ANY of the window seats BEFORE airport check-in (and when you say D you’re talking about the middle seats just so we’re on the same page).

All you have to do to get the A or K side is contact CX and ask them to manually assign the seats to you either thru twitter or by calling them. I always ask their Twitter team they are very helpful and fully responsive.

Called HK and Thailand CX offices to change one of my CX-marketed but AA-operated LAX-HKG flights to a CX flight (which still had A-class available), all dates and other flights remaining the same and got three responses. I am sharing since I am guessing these data points my help some of you too:
1) TH phone - 'Happy New Year' with a giggle and information that this very very special fare does not allow changes [contrary to ticketing rules] whatsoever. Super friendly.
2) HK phone - no seats available even in F class (contrary to both Expert flyer AND Cathay's own website telling me otherwise) and should they be available it would be 100 USD plus ~16,000 USD fare difference despite it staying in A-class. Yikes,
3) HK Facebook team - Same story about no availability but then I asked them if they were certain and mentioned their website availability and they said 'the seat slot for rebooking is different from for newly purchasing ticket. You are free to check with the hotline staff for verification in this case' - never heard this to be the case but I'm also no expert here.
Agents only see what the computer system shows (change fee + reprice). All other explanations are their own.
But that is no surprise. The fare rules indicates repricing at an historical fare. But the error fare has been removed from the system, so they reprice at the next available A fare.

Mate, I never said you can't get 2A/K before check-in. I said, that you can't select them online. You can get them before check-in, manually, as you have correctly mentioned, as I have done on numerous occasions. I said that if you can't seem to select your seats online, it doesn't mean that the flights overbooked, it just means that you can't select any seats because they are blocked (as is 2A/K) and thus you can't select them online. If one were not to do anything about it, chances are one will be assigned 2A/K at check-in. And yes, the D seats are the middle seats.

It appears you just have misunderstood what I have written. If you reread what I've written, you will see that I have repeatedly reiterated the inability to select seats online.

cheers

Also feel free to put me down for F class HKG on Feb 16th at 3pm. But only have 1.5hrs so might not have time. Have much more time on the return in HKG F the 18th at 7:05pm.

If anyone is going to cancel their tickets please PM me. Thank you

To those wondering about FC lounges with last segment on Vietnam Airlines

I contacted Cathay and they confirmed me that I am eligible for The Pier and The Wing access when connecting from Cathay First leg to final leg on Vietnam Business. Unless they are being wrong about their own rules, you can now calm down.

(GCC is manned by same pool)

Not sure where the specific agreement claim comes from.

As I’ve been saying this whole time, Vietnam Airlines has a specific lounge agreement with CX. Vietnam Airlines J passengers just flying VN can even use their lounge not on a CX segment. CX and VN have a mutual agreement together.

if anyone wants to confirm the details of the agreement I suggest reaching out to CX for specifics. But yes, it does it exist.

can add me to wiki too I got in on one deal in F (half cut on NYE wish I would have done more or made the dates a bit better but alas)

March 13: HAN-HKG-YVR (HKG-YVR in F technically March 14 at 0100)
March 18: YVR-HKG-HAN (YVR-HKG in F)

Question: I Might have missed it but has it been answered if there is anyway to do a Same Day Change type thing at the airport, I would love to move up my HKG-YVR flight, like they have an earlier flight to YVR and I dont need 11+hrs in HKG

Thanks

Does NZ have an exception https://www.airnewzealand.com.hk/par...unge-directory ?
Seems like a reverse exception:

Hong Kong Thai Airways lounge
(Including NZ4990, 4992 & 4994 operated by Cathay Pacific)
Find out more for Elite and Star Gold members 1 Guest

NZ Elites on NZ codeshares get CX lounges, however...
