Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Hmmm...I hadn't considered this, I'd imagine you're right...it certainly can be done for the return flights on USA domestic trips, as long as one doesn't make it a consistent pattern for numerous trips. But I've never heard about it internationally, especially under unusual circumstances such as this.

Couple years ago I took advantage of the cheap one way PEN-YVR CX F fare.
The flight was CX PEN-HKG-LAX and then WS (WestJet) LAX-YVR.
Being based in Southern California, I simply dropped the last leg and left out of LAX with no issues.

generally, it is theoretically possble they could charge you, but that's all it is, theory.
in the past some people have been chased for some airlines, but the likelihood is way less than 1%.
the airlines don't like people dropping last legs of flights but there's not too much they can do. obviously in this instance it will probably happen a lot as HKG is a better airport for most people to get home from! if you kept doing it then the airline may consider taking action, but even then i think the worst i've heard is chucking you out of their frequent flyer programme. i don't see how they can compel people to pay a re-priced ticket they've already taken. it's about this point, arm chair lawyers start getting involved..
in the past some people have been chased for some airlines, but the likelihood is way less than 1%.
the airlines don't like people dropping last legs of flights but there's not too much they can do. obviously in this instance it will probably happen a lot as HKG is a better airport for most people to get home from! if you kept doing it then the airline may consider taking action, but even then i think the worst i've heard is chucking you out of their frequent flyer programme. i don't see how they can compel people to pay a re-priced ticket they've already taken. it's about this point, arm chair lawyers start getting involved..

There is lots of discussion on dropping the last leg on ex-EU trips over in the BA forum as many people within the EU will book from neighbouring countries as it is often considerably cheaper than booking from their home country.
The general consensus is that whilst the airlines may be able to technically re-fare using the flights actually flown based on their fare rules and/or conditions of carriage, there is no way for them to enforce these rules or obtain payment from passengers. I do not recall anyone reporting airlines coming after them for re-fare payments on Flyertalk.
There is also talk about not using a travel agent as the airlines could debit them more easily owing to the commercial relationships that travel agents have with airlines, but I am also not aware of any cases of this being reported on Flyertalk either.

I mean who would watch a few passengers doing this in such a big group? And then how would you reach the passenger? You can always fly on another passport (because same names are common). It might be safe to fly out another day and on another carrier but nobody can force you to board a plane when you feel sick.

Well I pulled the trigger today after having this on hold and with 5 hours left to book. I was surprised the bookings on hold would also be valid but it went through for my HAN - BOS itinerary and just getting all positioning flights sorted from NYC...

Plus there are plenty of regular First Class passengers on these flights, you think they will cheapen their entire product because of the occasional cheapo F pax who booked this deal? I dare to say that CX gets less revenue from another oneWorld carrier who booked a mileage seat in F than any one pax who paid 1 grand for this.

That is indeed surprising. First time I ever heard of an airline honoring non-ticketed error fare reservations days after the fare has been pulled.

You can't do name changes. Tickets can be changed by paying the change fee after the first portion of the ticket has been flown. Otherwise you can cancel it and get a refund as applicable by the fare rules.

Why ask a random person to try changing its ticket if you can do it yourself on CX website (only if you booked through CX booking channels). Just go to "Manage Booking" and select "Change Booking". All you have to do is select your new dates and it will give you flight options. Once you hit continue, it will re-price and show you the total you have to pay to change the ticket. You don't have to finish the transaction, just hit go back to manage booking.
CX doesn't have control over VN's inventory so they can't Zero out the premium discounted fares. Your fare must have a $100 change fee per passenger and it is not re-pricing since there is availability on the same inventory from your original ticket

I just tried to change my booking to see if I can change my HKG-HAN flight as I'm booked on VN since there is a mild panic that my parents won't be able to access the first class lounge because they have an 8 hour layover. CX is quoting me USD199.98 for two people to change the HKG-HAN sector onto Cathay Dragon metal. Contemplating doing this but scared to risk my booking. Any advice?
Also from what I understand, I don't have to worry about my parents entering and exiting the country as they do not require visas anyway right? (the only benefit of being SEAsian and yes i've checked phew)

I figured it may be culled quietly as it wasn’t paid for but apparently not and ticketed straight away. This is my first true mileage run and features 45+ hours in first class in the first 3 days. I’m excited!

Read the fare rules. If the fare class is available you can change prior to departure if you don't change the routing for $100.
