Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I was booked in first on 25th Oct.
That flight has now been cancelled. CX moved me to business class on the 26th on CX843 with a 12:30 connection at HKG for my flight to SGN.

At least your flights rebookings make sense. CX also moved me to business class on 26th Oct. But my HKG to SGN flight is rebooked for 29th Oct. Not sure what they're expecting me to do for 3 days at the airport!

Was downgraded from F to J and got an e-mail saying that my flight to Vietnam was cancelled. Asked to rebook to June and was told:
As per my previous email that I informed you ticket is not allowed to rebook to Jun2022. The latest date that you can rebook is before 31DEC21. After this time if you cannot travel then the ticket is apply refund.
Please note that now passenger can travel to Vietnam and the document is advised via email before.

As Always Flyin noted above, I would cite Section 10 and tell them you do not accept the downgrade or the refund. I would give them the specific dates I wanted to fly including flight numbers.

"Passengers are not allowed to enter" Vietnam.
Exceptions are limited to Vietnamese citizens, diplomats, and "experts/business managers/high-tech workers."
Even those are subject to a 28-day quarantine.
And in first, there are ZERO flights with first until January.
I would stop e-mailing and call.

DP: We had J flights for Oct 3 and the second leg from HKG to SGN was cancelled so my new date is Nov 4 (first available). When I emailed about it, they replied with the new flight option but also noted that Vietnam allows travel into country. I'll be clarifying who is allowed if they try to make me fly on Nov 4.

Problem, at least for me, is that 2nd January is the first day with first class being sold. In the past, I was told I had to take the first flight on which "A" class was available, which is what they did with you.
I am not available to fly on the 2nd.
I will be looking for some flexibility to fly later in the month.
