Is this trip worth it for the stress and hassle?

Should I just cancel it or give it a try?

It looks like changing dates or destinations is a no-go at this point, but I've been looking.
What stress @:-)

If fare is honored, it's in Biz

Hassle, ya, your arrival and departure times are sub-optimal, but Biz at that price .....

Bangkok itself is a great city and well worth a visit even for a few days. Just stay away from organized tours @:-)
EVA777 and swingaling like this.

I'm still seeing some dates end of Feb/early March to BKK. Haven't clicked through to booking.

I could not disagree with your friend more. That's full-on crazy talk.

BKK is a much more interesting city than PVG, which I found quite boring. There are some cool buildings in Shanghai, and that's pretty much it (granted, I only was there for a day and I've been to BKK many times).
DPS I also found quite overrated.

Just another personal viewpoint: having been to PVG many times and DPS once, I chose to return to BKK (been there many times also) for this potential trip. All of these locations are fantastic. I doubt, if we go, that we'll spend much time in Bangkok this trip, but there are so, so many great areas just a short hop away: beaches (around Phuket), Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, and Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia are pretty close too.

Thailand is absolutely worth a visit -- but you must leave BKK.

You can't go wrong with either one.

BKK, like what others have mentioned, also close to Chiang Mai, Myanmar, and Cambodia. PVG, if you have visa, it's easy to hop onto other cities especially with high speed rails within 6 hours like Xi'an.

Where did you do this out of curiosity? Have supposed ticket # from Expedia but haven't found a way to confirm on HK so far; not about to call and ask lol.

Did you figure this out? The terms are confusing since it seems to say both that you can cancel within 24 hours, and that cancellations are $200

At what point do you think it will be "safe" to book positioning flights, hotels, other nonrefundable reservations?

Cancelling within 24hrs is allowed only from fares booked to/from USA at no fee, so yes it applies to this fare and overrules the general rule.

Ko Samui can also be a very enjoyable beach trip that is easy to get to from Bangkok and has a nice open airish airport.

Eh, shoot. Thanks for the pointer. "No Data Found" makes me think I'm going to be out of luck. (Doing this based on 13 digit Ticket # from Expedia email, assuming that's what I should be using...)
