- signup bonuses for various DL-branded AMEX cards (usually have a spend requirement)
- if you already have planned travel, consider buying up (in advance, not at check in) for 50% MQM bonus and more flexible same-day-confirmed options which are another way to increase MQMs
- Hilton 250 MQMs per stay of 2 nights or more

If you look on the Delta site and select flexible dates for flights from LAX to NRT, you will see options for under $1000. For example, Dec 2 - 4, $771, LAX-DTW-NRT-PDX-LAX and nets 13,900 miles
If you want cheaper options, you can fly China Eastern to Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok that will get you similar miles but in the $500 price range. Bookable on Expedia for various dates in December (e.g. Dec 2 - 4, $500, 14,500 miles, LAX-PVG-HKG-PVG-LAX)

Sure. You can consider a LAX - PVG - SIN - PVG - LAX run on China Eastern which gives you about 21,000 miles for under $1000 depending on travel dates (make sure you get the mileage earning classes and B fare for PVG-SIN-PVG legs which gives 150%) The positioning flights from DTW - LAX - DTW gets you about 4000 miles and is in the $400 - $500 range depending on dates.

A MR to HNL will get you about 9,500 miles. e.g. Nov 20 -21, $831(V) or $762 (E), MCI-ATL-HNL-MSP-MCI
Changing the routing to MCI-ATL-HNL-MSP-DTW-MCI gives 10,200 miles but raises the cost to $1082.
Use the Flexible Dates option on the Delta website for the desired dates and possibly better routings and prices
If you pick the 9,500 option a same day trip to SLC or DFW will get you the remaining miles in the $200 range

First, thanks in advance for any help. Considering at quick ATL-SIN to get this but looking for other options with less time in the air. Good with quick turn or multiple trips to achieve the 20k.
Thought this was covered until a recent ATL-SIN trip was changed.

MU gives you 150% of base miles for MQD, MF 100% (these are 2018 rates, check 2017 to be sure)

for this exact routing, it's $1250 or something like that on Delta.com, marketed by Delta on KE metal.
