Well I got curious and looked up the visa restrictions. For US passport holders its not as bad as I thought.

There are no hotel facilities available in the airport transit area. However passengers whose connection time is over 6 hours and less than 18 hours may be allowed to leave the airport for hotel accommodation or shopping. If granted permission to leave, passenger will be given a transit permit which must be submitted to immigration 3 hours before departure time. One coloured (passport) photograph is required. So, does this earn miles anywhere BESIDES the airline's own plan? If not, I'm doubtful any FT members could even use this fare.

Over on the Middle East forum, there are multiple threads devoted to the topic of Saudi visas. Although this citation looks promising, it's always ambiguous, and I haven't seen anyone post a recent case of actually obtaining a Saudi transit visa.

Well, I'll be perfectly content if I never go back to that country again in my lifetime so I have no interest in trying this myself (not even considering the worthless Saudia only miles). The info I posted is the IATA info, so a transit visa shouldn't be needed. Perhaps if one wanted to leave the airport you might apply at in country at the airport, but if you stay in the airport then according to the info given to airlines, you're good to go.
