The below is from our moderator (taken from the first post of the thread - bolding is mine). Feel free to add more if necessary / as needed.

Happy 2014!

Please use this thread to post or to follow Economy Fares which are 'Good Deals' but where the cost per mile is more than 3-4 cents per mile, which is the usual upper limit for what is considered a true 'MR Deal'.

A few requests for posting in the thread:

-members posting their deals please post the city pairs/airport codes and pricing in the body of the post and not just in the post title as it isn't visible for those reading it on mobile devices (ETA: ...or in email alerts)

-some members may be unaware that you can subscribe to this thread and to do that you can go to "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread and click on "Subscribe to this thread".

This is from a few pages back but I have a general question about US domestic fares (please move to own thread if appropriate).

It was my understanding after years of fare-searching that US domestic fares are simply 2 one-way fare costs joined together. Is that no longer accurate (per above)? If yes I'll start changing my fare-search pattern to do roundtrip searches too.

Generally most domestic one-way fares are simply half of the roundtrip. In some rarer cases though, sale fares can require a roundtrip purchase to be valid. I would guess this falls into that group.

The one-way vs. round-trip fare comparison will vary by market and degree of competition. Most markets are indeed one-way times 2. But some markets require a round-trip for the cheapest fares. United seems to be the one airline that socks you one way on uncompetitive city pairs. For instance, DEN-IAH next March is $293 RT, but $384 for a one way ticket.

AA: BOS-DFW-OGG/HNL (and other various permutations routing thru AA/US hubs) for ~$600 in late November/early December. Roughly 5.8 CPM, can probably get a little less if you try and get 500 mile mins from BOS-PHL-DFW-OGG, etc. Seems to be a couple of same day turns if you're up for redeyes and the slAAveship 757 OGG-LAX.

both DL and UA are doing this more and more frequently lately and i am not liking it one bit. typically, the one way is still cheaper, but no longer is it exactly half of the rt, usually about 60-70% of it

I used to see this frequently on US for VPS-DCA. RT would often be $200-260, but OW would be ~$600. It was only operated once or twice a day, and I couldn't leave work in time on Friday to catch the VPS-DCA departure. DCA-VPS was well-timed, but would cost $600 OW. I could have bought tickets in the opposite order, but I didn't want to go through that much trouble for 2+ hours on a CRJ2 when I could easily connect through ATL and consistently pay $222 RT. Alas, I no longer live in FL, and that route is gone now with AA/US having to divest at DCA.
