I have seen availability in mid May (eg: 16-19) and plenty of availability from early September to mid October. Immediate turnarounds are available, seemingly only on weekdays and with only 1.5 hours in ANC.

EDIT: United seems to be matching this fare (albeit via DC and/or Denver)
EDIT 2: Weekends work on AA but there seems to be a minimum stay of a couple of nights.

MAD-ORD-MAD or BCN-ORD-BCN for approx 440 Euros ($570) on OW (AA ticket). Or mix and match outbound and return for the same price. Not especially cheap until you realise this is in the summer school holidays, and then it's a great fare.

Sample dates midAug-endAug. Book on AA.com East Coast Cities may be available. For west coast add some $.

An Avios reward saver will get you/your family from LHR-MAD if needed. On the way back the ORD-BCN flights have an overnight layover in LHR, and it'd be a shame if you overslept for the LHR to BCN leg.

Cheapest LHR-ORD-LHR flights in this peak season for economy fares are $1250 and up, so gives an indication how good value this fare is.

DL: Germany - SAN, now-July, from €374 a.i.

On the German blogs - bookable direct at www.delta.com, www.klm.de, or any of the OTAs - but hurry! Available in April, May and June.

From Stuttgart (seems to be the cheapest), Duesseldorf, Munich, and Frankfurt to San Diego, via Atlanta, for dates up to and including June, requires at least a Saturday night stay. Out on Tu/We/Th/Fr/Sa and back from the following Tu seems to work best. Availability - check ITA.

Apparently also available to Phoenix (377 Euro) and Tampa (though couldn't replicate this fare for TPA).
