Cairo to Amman
Hi - I am planning a trip that starts in Amman and finishes in Cairo. Getting an open jaw flight for this is coming out at Ł750 which is outrageous compared to the Ł280 being quoted for a return directly to Cairo.
My question is this - can I simply get the return to Cairo and get a cab/other means of transport to Amman? If so, can anyone make suggestions accordingly - I really know very little about this part of the world so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Cab would be a long long trip.
RJ and MS have non-stop flights between CAI and AMM which would be a little bit faster. The fares aren't that cheap however. You could make a surface trip through the Sinai to the Dead Sea, cross over at Aqaba and travel by road to AMM.

To do this on land, you'll have to cross Israel.. Egypt and Jordan don't share a border. There may be a ferry direct from Sharm el Sheik or Taba to Aqaba in Jordan, but I'm not confident. I'd fly back to AMM, and then home from there, keep it simple.

there is a ferry from Nuweiba to Aqaba. from Cairo, you can take a bus to Sharm el Sheikh (6 hrs), then bus or taxi to nuweiba (about 2 hrs) and then ferry. to get to Nuweiba in time for the ferry, probably have to take overnights bus from Cairo around midnight or so. not fun, but very cheap. If my memory is right, Cairo-Sharm bus was around $10. but ferry is about $50 (maybe more).

I've done the Nuweiba-Aqaba ferry independently and it was not a fun time. Tickets could only be purchased the day of travel and good luck figuring out when the ticket office opens. I asked the guy selling the tickets and he wouldn't give me a straight answer. If you can't get on the fast ferry you'll be stuck on the slow ferry which takes a long time to load. I took this and it almost took me 24 hrs from when I arrived at the ticket office in Nuweiba till I got off the boat in Aqaba. Oh yea, there aren't enough seats for everyone on the slow ferry. I saw tour buses getting on the fast ferry so maybe you could set up something from a travel agency in Cairo.
Fly to Amman if you can.

There are cheap RJ domestic flights between Amman and Aqaba, which can get you about half-way there. Then again, to drive from Amman to Aqaba is very cheap in an Amman taxi.

I did this trip last spring. The overland routing will take you via bus across the Sinai directly to Nuweiba, where you catch a ferry to Aqaba. I took a taxi up to Amman from Aqaba, it wasn't too bad. Jordan is a relatively small country.
The problem is the Sinai bus ride is horrible, and you'll need an overnight ride to catch the ferry in Nuweiba. The ferry wasn't too bad; indeed it was pretty nice if you get the more expensive fast ferry (but still cheap). You don't need to be on a tour bus to get it, just make sure you're early enough to buy the tickets and insist on that ferry.
The problem was at immigration, or rather before immigration. They took all non-Jordanian and non-Egyptian passports and then left all the foreigners on the boat while they processed all of them. Finally, after a long wait, we got off and they gave us all our passports with the stamps already in them. Man, it took forever.
The entire trip via land/sea was way too long. I don't think I'll ever do it again. I know, the airfares are very expesive given the actual flight distance, but the saved hassle and time is very much worth it.

Cairo to Amman
Buses leave from Cairo on Sundays and Thursdays at 8 pm and tickets cost 318 LE. This is around 43 euro. East Delta doesn't have a website and their buses are neiter clean nor safe (this is an understatement). I am also a single woman who will do this trip somewhere in March (but by plane). You can give me your email if you like to exchange more info.
