Severe weather in DC

Downtown is up and running, but there are still many without power. US government has an unscheduled leave policy in effect, and some government offices outside of the downtown area do not have power. If you are coming to the DC area, I advise calling your hotel (by the direct number) to make sure they have power. Also, if you are coming for business, check to make sure that the office you are visiting has power. Local power companies do not anticipate full restoration before Friday, July 6. Power outages are also causing spot fuel shortages as many gas stations are without power, so those that do have power are experiencing short supplies.

We were away for the weekend, and came home late last night expecting the worst, but had very little damage and with power in Foxhall. I definfitely saw some pretty big trees down this morning during my run through Georgetown, particularly along Potomac around 34th or 35th.

Have credit I need to use by 7/11/12 and UA has a decent last minute fare to DCA and I was thinking of visiting (July 4th to 7th) and getting a Visa for Myanmar.
Not sure how bad it is now.
Would this be a bad idea?
Anybody know if Myanmar embassy would be open?
Never been to DC before.

1. Book a hotel in the downtown area or Georgetown, rather than MD or Virginia. Prices should be low enough that you get a reasonable deal, you can walk or take metro where you need to, and there won't be any issues about the power. It will be hot, and there is a reasonable chance of a thunderstorm, so plan accordingly.
2. Confirm with the Embassy directly that they will be open and able to serve your needs. With the holiday in the middle of the week, many are taking two days offer bridge to one of the weekends. Myanmar has a small enough presence he that this could really disrupt their operations, even if they are open.

We never lost power or cable or cell service in Logan Circle, thankfully. Lots of branches and some entire trees were down on nearby streets, though. As of today, the places I've heard of where friends are still without power are parts of Fairfax, and White Oak and Germantown in MD.

I agree w/You want to go where?'s advice about contacting the Embassy directly to ensure they have power and are open.
