Legality of Codiene containing products in the USA
I have a sporting injury and shall be travelling to NYC next week. The medication i take is called 'Nurofen Plus' and contains 200mg ipruprofen and 12mg Codeine. Can be bought over the counter at any UK Chemist I rarely use it , just like to know it's there incase.
Will this likely cause me any promblems. I'm having difficu;ty finding out about the legal status of such a drug. Obviously I realise pure codiene would be highly illegal, but what about a tiny amount mixed with ibruprofen?
Regards
Tom

I occasionally carry painkillers such as this in case of tooth pain, without being in the original rx bottle and without a copy of the rx. I never had a problem and never expect to. Of course if you are toting 500+ tablets you may have cause to worry.

Moderate amounts shouldn't be a problem. If challenged, do tell the customs officer that it's over the counter in the UK. At worst you'll be asked to relinquish it, but it's highly doubtful.

My family jokes that I am a drug mule for them everytime I have a trip to Canada as no prescription is necessary there for coedine. I always come back with three or four bottles of medication that contains coedine.
In 20+ years of doing this, I've never been questioned.

I don't use prescription drugs, but I have a bottle with the label worn off that contains various vitamins, aspirin, melatonin, etc. and have never been questioned about them domestically or INTL.

I fly back from the UK and regularly have Nurofen Plus in my bag. I've only been asked about it once. I said it was an over-the-counter painkiller that I bought at a pharmacy, and they were happy. It was in all of its wrapping and everything. I think if it had been a bottle of pills with no labelling, they might have been more concerned.

Wikipedia states that Vicoprofen (the brand name for the combination of codeine and ibuprofen) is a Class III controlled substance. Although this means that the medication must be prescribed inside the U.S., there is no mention of the case of bringing it into the U.S. from another country.

Bring them back from the UK every trip. Just keep them in the original packaging. If they question just be honest and say OTC headache/aches and pain meds. never been questioned.
