DTW - GDL

I am completely foreign to travel in Mexico and was wondering if I could get some advice on best times/ways to travel to Guadalajara(GDL) from Detroit(DTW). I am hoping to go in July 2015 and would like to keep the cost of the flight as low as possible because it is being reimbursed at a later date.

Delta has RTs starting a little more than $511 through Atlanta.

If you are a masochist and can work out the schedule you could get a RT to Mexico City on Spirit for about $380 and domestic r/t flights from the airport at Toluca (a very nice $20 bus ride from MEX) to GDL for about $80.

I'd choose this one; several other airlines are coming in at $557, so if wanting miles for someone's FFP, a $46 difference isn't huge.
