If you are a masochist and can work out the schedule you could get a RT to Mexico City on Spirit for about $380 and domestic r/t flights from the airport at Toluca (a very nice $20 bus ride from MEX) to GDL for about $80.

I'd choose this one; several other airlines are coming in at $557, so if wanting miles for someone's FFP, a $46 difference isn't huge.
