I dont seem to be able to find a review for this hotel.

Has anyone stayed there before ?

Yes. Keep your expectations low, and you will have a nice stay. The place is not bad... just a tad run down (at least it was the last time I was there). Dont worry about distances, its all quite close and besides, taxis are so cheap its a joke.

The resort label attached to the Sheraton Yogyakarta is quite misleading. There are no beaches, little or no leisure activities and very little to fill one's free time other than conduct business you may have in the area. It isn't a bad hotel, mind you, just not one to which the moniker resort belongs. There is a swimming pool with a large surrounding green space, that at one time, must have been quite grandiose, but a lack of upkeep and refurbishment have given it somewhat of a shabby air.

At the time of my last stay, about 18 months ago, the hotel did offer free pickup service from the airport as well as a scheduled shuttle service to the downtown core. Both services take approximately 20 minutes. Taxi service is readily available and quite inexpensive.

The hotel itself is located on quite a large acreage, floored corridors lead from the central atrium, affecting a adjacent to a major thoroughfare. It ranks as one of the top properties in Yogya, but there isn't much high end competition. The building design is quite interesting as it uses an open courtyard/atrium design similar to that used by Embassy Suites, with the exception of the courtyard in the centre being open to the sky. Long marble corridors affect somewhat of an institutional feeling. This is tempered, to a degree, by the gentle strains of the live gamelan orchestra that plays most evenings.

As a Platinum SPG member, I was always upgraded to a suite, so I can't comment on a regular room. The suites I occupied, however, were very tastefully furnished in authentic Indonesian style with all the amenities one comes to expect in a better establishment. They were comprised of two separate rooms, a living/dining area and the bedroom. There was a guest powder room in addition to an ensuite bathroom. Both were clad in marble and were well maintained. I can't recall whether the toiletries were the generic Sheraton type or better, but I do remember them being comprehensive. An in room safe, twin televisions with a smattering of English content, bathrobes and a mini fridge refreshment centre with complimentary drinking water and hot beverage making facilities were some of the room amenities provided. A nice touch was the nightly turndown service, when two male attendants would light a scented oil pot as well as provide the usual chocolates and replenish the fruit plate. The suites also had two balconies overlooking Mount Merapi and on a clear day one could see the smoke rising from the volcano's crater. More often than not, however, the summit was enshrouded in mist and haze.

The hotel does not have a Club or Executive Lounge, and breakfast is not included with most rates. There are a number of dining choices on property which are quite satisfactory, if a bit pricey by Indonesian standards. There is/was a regular weekend buffet type offering that seemed an attractive option, however, I never took advantage of it. There was also a bar featuring a nightly Happy Hour and quite decent pub type fare. There is a large banquet hall type restaurant on the hotel grounds adjacent to the main entrance, but it wasn't in use during my stays.

The property, in general, seems to have been conceived as quite upscale, but has fallen on harder times during the economic setbacks that have paralysed that part of the world over the past number of years. It is definitely one of the better lodging choices in Yogyakarta, but if you are seeking a true resort holiday, this is not the place for you.

I stayed there for a long weekend in July 2002 and have to admit, that for the 40$ rate I was paying they offered quite a value. It may not be as goog as the Hyatt in Yogya but it´s a well kept property. I had a room at the Preferred Guest Level overlooking the pool, which was well kept and quite spacious. If you are in Yogya for Business or for just one or two nights it´s ok. If you are planning for a resort vacation you better go to the Amanjiwo next to Borobudur Temple, which is by far the best choice in this area.
Despite the breakfast was not included in my rate, I can really recommend having breakfast at this property, as other dining options outside the hotel are not very tempting yet really cheap

Many thanks to Gaucho100K, Flyme2 and AustrianFT for responding to my queries.

I just got back from a 3 night stay at the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta and as I kept my expectations "low" I had a pleasant stay at the "resort".

I was, however, disappointed with the rather limitted variety of local food available on the menu at the only restaurant in the hotel, though the quality of food was excellent.

There was also no newspaper delivered to my room, and there appears to be a shortage of English language newspaper in the hotel.

Though taxis were generally inexpensive and plentyful, I had to wait for almost 30 mins for a taxi to downtown at 7am in the morning!

As I only managed to read Flyme2's post after I got back, I didnt take advantage of the complimentary aiport pickup. However, upon checking-out I was offered a complimentary shuttle to the airport which was a nice gesture.

I also found the hotel staff to be very helpful and friendly, which made up for the little glitches during my stay.

Smile Starwood Indonesia: Pics&Review of the beautiful Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta.

For pics see: http://www.e-traveller.net/pics/2005...gk-mustika.php

( Thanks to the help of LH738)

After my stay in the beautiful Sheraton Bandara it was great to be in Yogyakarta again.. Transfer was also complimentary, however in a different style. With a Suzuki van, the short distance to the hotel was made. Since the reception was located at the 7th floor!, the Suzuki went all up to the top of the hotel! It was quite surprising.

The checked – in went smoothly, and the lady was really nice. In Indonesia they sure now how to welcome guests! The hotel was not busy when I stayed here.
She escorted me to a nice junior suite I was upgraded to. Besides this suite I had a look in the very very nice Presidential suite

The suite had nice Indonesian details in the doors. In the livingroom, two beautiful Indonesian wooden puppets were placed.
The suite was spacious, and I was really happy with the two small balconies ( livingroom + sleepingroom) with the famous view of Mount ………………..,nope alas not Mount Merapi. Since it was too cloudy, no Mount Merapi view! But still a nice place to enjoy my breakfast and some drinks.
In the spacious living room was a dining area and a nice sitting area. Complimentary bottles of water were available at the refreshment centre. A coffee/teamaker was available.

The bed in the separate bedroom was large but not too comfortable however. In the corner of the room was a small working area.
The large save was located in the closet, and was locket with a credit card. The closet appeared to be too smallish to hang my shirt and jacket, it was possible however to hang it diagonal.
Bathroom was spacious with a separate shower.
Doors of the balcony did not close properly, so a lot of warm air comes into the room. ( The hotel could save on the A/C when the doors would close properly I guess, and besides that it would be ok for the environment!)

The Royal SPA is a must here. The interior of the spa is beautiful designed in an Javanese style. Take the royal Javanese massage, where two skillfull fysiotherapists will give you a great massage and you feel reborn again! I did have two wonderful massages here. It is very relaxing to use the spa facilities, sauna / steambath / whirlpool afterwards.

The Sheraton Mustika has a beautiful designed swimmingpool /poolarea. It reminded me of the Sultan ‘s Water castle in Yogyakarta. I had a good swim here and enjoyed my sateh with rice from the Tamansari poolbar. The many little flies near the swimmingpool seemed to like my food also!
Toilets near the pool could be cleaner, ground was wet and smelled.
Besides the pool area, you can find two tenniscourts on the hotelgrounds.
Fitnesscenter was ok, albeit somewhat small.

Restaurants: one of them was on the topfloor. It was only opened for groups and served mainly sea – food.menus. The other restaurant, the Sasono Hondrowino, was located at the 7th floor. The restaurant has a terrace from where you have a nice view of the garden / poolarea. You can also dine at the terrace. Service was friendly but not always professional. They served me a dish I did not order and when I asked the waiter who served it to me he did not anwer, his colleage helped me. It was somewhat strange, since they did not make any excuse about it, just were smiling. Only when I asked them how this could have happened they gave an excuse.

Breakfast in my room via roomservice was rather fast and basic. You could notice it was done without much care.
However it was great to have it on the balcony. Breakfast buffet in the restaurant was ok, not very special. Selection of bread, meat and fruits was limited. Quality and selection of the food could be better.

The Sasono Suko lounge was a favourite place or mine. Very good service, nice comfy interior, friendly personnel, good quality of cakes and drinks. There is a section with a small library. The lounge has also a big plasma screen which shows a lot of sports.
I was really pleased with one of the waiters, she also know some dutch words, like “meneer” and “lekkerrr”!, and she always put on my favourite Indian song when I was there. She made me feel at home here :-: .
I tried the cheesecake here, my favourite, and yep it was “lekker’!
One strange thing here however. In the announcements for Happy Hour I noticed that for ALL drinks the second one was free. But wine and some other drinks, or coffee, was not included. There seemed to be more guests disappointed with this, since the hotel promised “all drinks” at the happy hour.

I liked the interior of the small coffee bar, with a amazing view of the poolarea.

The concierge of the hotel was outside. Since the concierge in the Sheraton Bandara was so excellent, it was hard to compete with them. In general the concierge was very friendly, accurate, and made it easy for me to arrange my trips.

I did have very nice stay here, I liked my upgraded suite, the beautiful designed poolarea and the Indonesian designs in the hotel. In general personnel was friendly and I did feel at home in this hotel. I am sure I will return to this hotel when in Yogya, and have the great Javanese massage again!
Some remarks however:
Hotel:
* Some parts of the hotel, f.i. the exterior need some renovation i.m.o.
* Attitude of personnel: Although in general the attitude was very friendly, there seemed to be a lack of “the finishing touch”, to go one step further in service / attitude. But also in the maintenance of the room / hotel. When arriving by car, sometimes there is no one to open the door, even once a boy just walked away and just looked at me. When they do open the door there is no “Welcome at the Sheraton Mustika!”. Of course there are exceptions: like the waitress in the coffeebar!
* No ATM or money machine in the hotel. Money change not possible at the reception, but somewhere in a wing of the hotel, on a floor with private business and exchange shops.
* Only one internet computer (paid) in the lounge which was always occupied so no chance to use it.

I know this is an old thread...but I just tried to book the Yogy Sheraton and found that it was closed...no explanation...just closed.
Any information on this property and if it is scheduled to reopen??

Edited: I found that the Hotel was badly damaged in an earthquake May 27, 2006 and closed.

I could not find any information regarding re-opening if that was possible.

The impression I got when following up on this before when I was in Indonesia was that it's unlikely for the hotel to reopen - it sustained serious damage in the earthquake and the hotel market in Yogya was such that it was unlikely to be worthwhile for them to undertake the repairs necessary. Hopefully it does happen at some stage though.

Yeah the Sheraton was badly damaged in the Yogyakarta earthquake of May 2006. I think that the fact the occupancy rates weren't fantastic has meant that hasn't been much of a spur to get it open again.

I probably think if it hasn't happened by now means it won't. I hope it does, however. I enjoyed my stays there and an international hotel (imo) helps bring more tourists to the city which is always a good thing.

Just received an email from the manager of the Sheraton Mustika Yogyakarta, apparently the hotel is in the process of reopening. Currently in soft opening at the moment and should hopefully be available for booking from October 2008. Was planning on heading up to Yogyakarta over the Christmas/New Years period, so might work out well ^

No indication given in the email from the manager, I'll see what I can find out (given the time that the hotel's been closed for, one would hope so!).

There is a small ad in today's Jakarta post. It says that offers stays in "recently refurbished Grand Rooms", so that means at least some of the rooms have been refurbished.

They have a promo until the end of the month (09/08) that includes,:

1 night stay in a Grand Room

Breakfast for two in the restaurant

A 45 minute foot or neck and back massage

The price is rp715,000 net.

Not a bad deal really.
