Do points help get you to a higher status?

All,

I've been a Priority Club member for several years now. I had their credit card and using the card plus staying with them maybe 25 times a year it was very easy to reach platinum level every year. The key was that the points earned from stays and the credit card went toward my status level.

Over the past year, circumstances have come up and I've been staying at Marriott more and more, and decided to switch to the Marriott program and credit card. The problem is that the points earned from the credit card do not seem to be helping me earn Gold status. I hardly ever use my rewards points to stay at hotels, the room ugrade that I got for the 25 or so stays while work paid for the hotel was worth much more to me then a couple of nights free.

So my question is I am right in that the points do not help you with your status level, and if so are there other programs like Priority Club where the points are used to account for status?

Thanks.

Hi esgraham,

Elite statuses are based on the number of personal nights you stay with us. Points are not counted towards achieving or renewing elite statuses. Remember, our Marriott Rewards credit cards do provide you with automatic Elite night credit (10 nights for the basic card and 15 for the Premier credit card), which can help you renew your Gold Elite status with us.

Accumulated points are, however, counted towards our Lifetime elite statuses.

Kind regards,

Drew

Nights stayed count towards status (Silver = 10 nights, Gold = 50 and Platinum = 75) but as far as I know, points can only help you with attaining Lifetime status at each level - do a search of the forum for the details as they have been posted numerous times before and I don't know them off the top of my head!

*EDIT*

Beaten to it by the expert!

Lifetime Elite

I found this information on Lifetime Elite:

We have an Emeritus (Lifetime) status that offers Elite levels after certain criteria have been met.

Emeritus Platinum status is offered after the following qualifications are met:

Guest has been a member of Marriott Rewards program for 12 years, with at least one year at Platinum Elite.
Guest has stayed 1000 nights over the history of the Marriott Rewards account.
3,000,000 total points earned during the history of the account.

For Silver, the night requirement is 600 nights and the point requirement is 1,500,000.
For Gold, the night requirement is 800 nights and the point requirement is 2,000,000.
This means I'll never reach elite status as my goal is to not travel 75 days a year.

Thanks.

Two points to remember:

1) if you have the credit card you would only need to do 60 nights (with the Premiere card)

2) Marriott still offers a "rolling" year - so if you time it right with a family vacation, extended stay, or whatever, you could probably hit plat once; without doing the road warrior type nights.

Lifetime Silver has kind of lost its' glamour since the advent of the credit card - but lifetime gold and certainly plat has value...........

Not quite correct. You will not reach lifetime platinum elite. However, if you have been silver elite at least one year, you can become a lifetime silver, or, if you have at least one year as gold elite, you can become lifetime gold.

And note: you only need to have that elite level 1 year ... so if you happen to have 1 travel-heavy year, you can then be a silver for the rest of the time and still make it to lifetime platinum (although reaching the points and nights requirements would take forever).

Cheers,

GenevaFlyer
