Do points help get you to a higher status?

All,

I've been a Priority Club member for several years now. I had their credit card and using the card plus staying with them maybe 25 times a year it was very easy to reach platinum level every year. The key was that the points earned from stays and the credit card went toward my status level.

Over the past year, circumstances have come up and I've been staying at Marriott more and more, and decided to switch to the Marriott program and credit card. The problem is that the points earned from the credit card do not seem to be helping me earn Gold status. I hardly ever use my rewards points to stay at hotels, the room ugrade that I got for the 25 or so stays while work paid for the hotel was worth much more to me then a couple of nights free.

So my question is I am right in that the points do not help you with your status level, and if so are there other programs like Priority Club where the points are used to account for status?

Thanks.
