Puerto Rico does use USD. But in case you haven't noticed, most (all?) credit cards that charge forex these days do so for "foreign transactions" (ie, they don't care that the transaction is in US Dollars, they just care that it was made outside of the 50+DC USA), not just for "foreign currency" (as they were years ago).

So while they do use USD, the credit card companies (dunno if all, but enough of them) define it as "foreign" for the purpose of classifying what is a "foreign transaction".

I would presume that forex is also charged by those same credit card companies for purchase in Guam and Saipan.

Now, having said that, the Marriott Premier Visa does not charge any forex at all (no foreign transaction fee, no foreign currency fee), so it is in fact my go-to card for foreign travel. It's just that I also apparently have to make it my go-to card for Puerto Rico travel (despite most of my stays in Puerto Rico being with hotels in other programs!).

Actually, every third-party site (that has worked for me in other parts of Calfornia and/or on other dates) that I've tried shows higher rather than lower rates for these (if they show either at all). So I suggest you might want to book a refundable rate at one of these soon, if you haven't already, in case no LNF shows up and you absolutely need one of these properties. (There are other Marriott properties nearby that are a lot lower on Marriott.com -- Renaissance Stanford Court, CY Downtown, Marriott Fisherman's Wharf -- but presumably they're not right for your needs.)

If someone does find you an LNF, you can always cancel your refundable rate and book again (given that you have to submit an LNF within 24 hours of booking) if it's at the same hotel, and if it's at the other hotel book and confirm the LNF first before cancelling the refundable at the other hotel.

Weekend rate on marriott.com is $65.99 and advance purchase rate is $55.99.

I tried submitting LNF for a breakfast rate since several websites offered the stay at $55.99 including breakfast and free cancellation, but was denied since they claimed that special amenities aren't included.
