Not sure yet - their stay is not for another few weeks...

One thing I will add however - she (my SIL) needed to change a date on the reservation. Since the electronic cert and res were in her name, she was able to without me even getting involved...

Actually, 180,000 US miles because of the 50% transfer bonus going on right now. US miles are redeemable for any Star Alliance carrier, so it's a great use of your MR points.

Act fast if you want the USAir bonus, though. It's only good through this month, and you want to leave a little time for it to go through.

I went for two USAir TPs for 360k USAir. Gonna take a family of 5 to Asia on that ^

Reviving thread. Is it still possible to book a room with my free night stay cat 1-4 for a family member? I have a different last name than my parents and will not be with them for any verification needs when they check-in.
Thank you!

Yes, it's fine by rule. To make it easiest, call and make sure their name is on the reservation after you've booked.

From what I understand it is not okay to do this. The Cat 1-4 certs can only be used if you will physically be at the property.

You can redeem them online by selecting an award night and then having the cert applied to take place of the points. It will then function just like any other award stay... just make sure the person staying is listed on the room instead of just you. Do you have a link to any terms that expressly prohibit this?

Yes - you can do this, but it is against the Ts&Cs. I can't find the link to them however.

The cert isn't transferable, but that's not the same as using the cert yourself to reserve for someone else. If you find otherwise, please share.

This knowledge comes from a 15 minutes discussion I had with a rep on the phone last week about trying to use my cert for a friend when I wouldn't be there. You can use points, but not the 1-4 certs.

Generally speaking - I doubt many people have an issue with this though.

I'm suspect they gave you the wrong info or something was lost in translation. Redeeming a Cat 1-4 e-Cert should be treated no differently than an award stay... it essentially replaces the points and is identical beyond that. Nothing I can find states otherwise.

How is that not transferring the cert?

BTW - we've had reports on FT of people doing it successfully (usually by having their name on the reservation too), but the Cat 1-4s technically aren't transferable - ie, they're supposed to be used by the MR member for him/her self.

Cheers.

Because you're not transferring the cert if *you* book the room using your account and the cert/points within, even if you allow someone else to stay. I'm saying that the certs are akin to award stays, where Marriott has no issue if you book for a friend, etc. Same as the airlines allow with their awards. If there are specific terms that prohibit, please correct me, but I haven't been able to find anything prohibiting this.

You're saying that, but that doesn't mean Marriott is saying that it's the same as award stays re: the Cat 1-4s.

There have been reports of people doing it successfully - when their name is also on the ressie - but not necessarily when their name is not on the ressie, there's a dif last name & they won't be there.

If Marriott didn't have a problem w/ using the Cat 1-4s for anyone else, they probably wouldn't say non-transferable in the T&Cs. Non-transferable implies that it's to be used by the MR member.

Not saying someone can't do it, but not saying it's a slamdunk/your interpretation is correct.

Cheers.
