I have never heard of Courtyard Club, but then it makes sense, because when I started, only nights at Marriott FS counted towards Marriott Black (now Silver), Gold, and Platinum. Fairfield, Courtyard, Townplace, Springhill, etc. did not count for roomnight credit, though I do not remember whether they counted for points or not.
I guess I need to call up and find out how many points, nights, and years I have lifetime, don't I? I am pretty sure I have almost 1,000 nights lifetime, and coming close to 10 years at least, did not know about the point requirement too, is it 3,000,000? WOW! Another question for me to ask, I am sure I have somewhere over 2,000,000, but looks like I might have my work cut out for me!

My memory is that the initial levels were (in order) Red, Gold and Black, and then Platinum was added later. When Marquis switched to Rewards, the levels were reordered. Silver was added and Black was retired.

At many properties when I whip out my platinum card to get the 10% discount at gift shops, it is still rung up as "Marquis discount". That of course brings a wistful smile full of memories to my face as I think about the yearly luggage tags and other perks we used to get...

Got me thinking what was the name back in the day. So I went and looked and found an old Gold card. I think I have a Black one in there somewhere as well.
But the name listed is Marriott's Club Marquis.
Courtyard Club was a program for frequent stayers at CYs only. There was a FI Club as well. The CY Club cost $10/year to join, unless you made CY Club Gold level which I think was 36 nights in a calender year. Then you got lifetime membership for free plus some free suite upgrade coupons and free breakfast coupons. For every 12 nights stayed, you would also receive a free-night coupon (plus a suite upgrade and a few breakfast coupons if you were Gold level.) I do believe the FI Club worked similarly.

11 more years, millions points ahead of me...
And probably I will just hit Silver (no more than 21-30 nights a year, just priv for now)

By Club Marquis do you mean Marriott Marquis member? When I originally joined, it was called "Marriott Marquis Platinum" though I have not heard that "Marquis" reference in years. I have long wondered what happened to Marriott Marquis references.
I have never heard of Courtyard Club, but then it makes sense, because when I started, only nights at Marriott FS counted towards Marriott Black (now Silver), Gold, and Platinum. I was also aware that Club Marquis = Marriott Rewards Elite, but what I was curious about finding out was at what point did the Club Marquis name go away.
I had never heard of Courtyard Club until just a few days ago, but in hindsight, that turns out not to be relevant to me, and to everyone who was a member of all of the different rewards programs that were similar, we are all one big happy family, under the Marriott Rewards umbrella, Elite membership now, yes?

Club Marquis went away when Honored Guest Awards (the old HGA program) was merged with Courtyard Club to become Marriott Rewards good at all brand (except RI..they joined later)...gosh I believe this all took place around 95-96ish (definately wasn't before 94)

Club Marquis (in some form) stuck around once Marriott Rewards began. I remember the one (and only) time I hit Marquis Black level, it was in '99. I have my card here which shows "Marriott Rewards" with the black "Club Marquis" banner on the right side - expiring in 11/00. I'm also pretty sure that I do remember earning that status only via Marriott stays (not CY) - but I could be wrong on that point. I just remember that I was trying my darndest to find regular Marriotts just so I could get that! I have a regular Marriott Rewards gold card expiring in 01/01, so my guess is that the "Club Marquis" name went away sometime in 2000.

FWIW, I seem to remember that Black was the highest Marquis level. I think Platinum came around when Marriott Rewards rolled out their multi-brand elite program, and Marquis went away. But I don't think Platinum was ever a level in the Marquis prgram. But you're dead on right with Red>Gold>Black - that's definitely how I rose the Marquis ranks!

Per the Change in status level? thread from back in 2000, it looks like the new levels (Silver/Gold/Plat) began on June 1, 2000. I thought that before Marriott rolled out those levels that they had a period of time where the levels were Gold/Black/Plat but that was a long time ago.

As to the "Marquis" term, I still see it on some of my hotel receipts. Gives me a warm feeling of continuity, as a matter of fact.
