Something you might want to do is to visit their website and sign up for email confirmations. They will email you a copy of your bill for each stay you have with them. It's very handy since I have to turn in the original to corporate for reimbursement and don't want to file away paper copies. If you notice that points are missing then just retreive the email and print out the bill or just forward it on to Marriott. It's also a good way to verify that when your company reimburses you that you're getting the correct amount back.

Give starwood a try. They have more hotels outside of the US. They also treat there elite better. The only downside is they have the same incompetent system that tracks points. It always misses things.

I have the same problem with Marriotts in Latin America as the points/stays hardly ever post. I always give them my card now and make sure they enter my number which now usually solves the problem. Still, they are terrible about posting things. Since I'm usually there for multiple stays I just get on their case the next week.
I never have that problem with domestic Marriott properites though, they alway post right away.

So I'm afraid to say that you may be disappointed if accurate points posting is the main reason for your move.
I bailed from SPG this year and now with Marriott. However, it was due to uniformity of room quality and lifetime status, not point posting issues. With Marriott, I know that I'll get a quality room. SPG's 4 points and sheratons were a roll of the dice. And Marriott is the only hotel chain that offers lifetime status.

IMHO, Marriott is pretty darn good about posting Plat arrival gift points. I can only think of one time that they didn't. Starwood? I have a quarterly tickler in my calendar to call them and post all the missing plat arrival gift points - which is at least 50% of my stays IME. (& w/ SPG, 500 points is worth a LOT more than MR points.) With the cash guarantee, I find Marriott to be FAR more attentive to such details and much more consistent in delivering them. Starwood can give you incredibly great experiences as a plat, but can also hit you with lame recognition-free visits quite often. You will be on the phone w/ SPG much more than MR chasing points, I can absolutely guarantee you that. Marriott's highs aren't as high, but the consistency in delivering what they promise is incredibly good IMHO.

Why? Well strangely enough it's mot because of the standard of their hotels, which is generally high, nor is to do with their staff who are normally very good and friendly. It's also not about an isolated incident where they've screwed something up so badly that I vowed never to return.
The reason is quite simple, they're totally lousy at getting points to post. I live and travel mainly in Europe, so maybe this issue doesn't arise in the US, but I'm sick and tired of chasing and hassling them to get points to post..

Honestly I find most chains having trouble with int'l points posting.
Hyatt Regency Kowloon messing up one of two stays costing me an FFN as well as points. Sydney Harbor Marriott just posted the proper points from a stay in March this past week. And the Conrad HKG not posting at all without a call.
Just 3 of several examples that show me all the chains (havent used spg) have troubles with int'l points posting.
