Dinner for Two certificates

After checking the outrageous prices of some nice restaurants in Europe, it seems to me that I should buy a bunch of "Dinner for Two" certificates which cost $90 and include a 3 course meal, non-alcoholic drinks and gratuity. It looks like a pretty good deal to have a full dinner at the best restaurants that Marriott has in Europe. Does it make sense to you? What would a similar dinner cost in any major european city?

Here's where I hesitate...

I like travel, and I like experiencing local places.

You mention 'best restaurants' - have you read reviews of the hotel restaurants you'd be likely to visit? Will the menu offerings in Paris be very similar to that in London?

There's only a handful of times that I've gone out of my way to eat at a hotel restaurant. They typically have a captive audience, and a limited menu. Often they are best chosen for convenience, not for the experience.

The hotel restaurants in France are, in general, pretty good. Unlike, say, the U.S. But, I also agree that getting out of the hotel is a good idea. Hang with the locals.

I also wonder what additional charges might show up on a $90 meal in Paris. Like taxes.

Besides, who wants to eat in France and non have some wine?

Keep in mind that some restaurants in the cities you are discussing are not included. For example The Pearl Restaurant in the Renaissance London Chancery Court, and The Le Pinxo in the Renaissance Paris Vendome. See the Terms & Conditions link at the bottom of the Dinner for Two web page which may be found at the link provided in my previous post (post #3). I would paste the T&C link here but since it is a javascript link, that won't work.

These certs are excellent for quite a few hotels. I will probably purchase a couple for my around the world trip next year. I used these certs regularly at Azule at the JW Ihilani up until a year or so ago. Unfortunately it is on the excluded list now.

Let's go back to the main point

Leaving aside whether you like or not to eat at a hotel, blend with locals, or drink a cabernet with your dinner, I ask again, is it a really good deal, pricewise, to have a 3 course meal, tax, service and soft drinks included for $45 each at the main restaurant of any Marriott/Ren property in Europe?

Yes, at some properties. And it is a 4 course meal including appetizer, soup/salad, entree, and dessert. BTW, it also includes mineral water as that is a non-alcoholic beverage. The only reason I bring that up is while I do not drink alcohol or soft drinks, I drink mineral water on a regular basis.

Buy 1 or 2 of these, take them with you and look at the menu when you get there to figure out whether it is worth it or not. If you prefer to know before hand, then email/call the hotels you will be staying at and ask them to FAX or email you a copy of the menu; or perhaps view their menus online if they are available.

From the Terms & Conditions:

1. THIS CERTIFICATE IS VALID FOR ONE DINNER, FOR TWO PEOPLE, AS SHOWN ON THE FRONT OF THIS CERTICATE. IF REDEEMED MORE THAN (2) TWO YEARS PAST THE DATE OF ISSUANCE, THIS CERTIFICATE IS LIMITED TO A DOLLAR VALUE OF $90. ANY CHARGES ABOVE THAT AMOUNT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CERTIFICATE HOLDER.

Doesn't this seem to limit the value?

Read a little closer... it says IF you try to redeem it in 2 YEARS or later from the date you buy the certificate, then the value changes to only $90. So, if you use it before 2 years pass by, then the certificate will pay for two full dinners, whatever the cost. After 2 years, it only pays for $90 of whatever you spend.
