Theft question
So I was staying at the Brooklyn Marriott and stupid me left my ipod in the car when I had the car valet parked. When I got in the car in the morning it was gone, I noticed this before I even left the garage. So I immediatly complained to the parking people and they all played dumb and said that they could not help. So I went to the front desk at the Marriott and asked for the manager. While talking to him he told me that marriott was not responsible because the parking deck is owned by a seperate company and that if I read the back of the card it says that. I think this is total BS since the valet is right in front of the hotel and there is a sign that say's marriott parking. Does anybody have any advise?
Thanks
Thanks

1) Don't leave valuables in your car.
2) File a claim under your homeowner's policy?

Chances are you'll never get your iPod back, but if enough people file police reports, the people at the garage will get "some looking into"....
I cannot re-iterate #1 enough. Do NOT leave valuables in your car if multiple unknown individuals have access to it. Would you have left it in the car if you gave the keys to a valet at a restaurant????
Steve
PS: Don't get me wrong, I'm very sorry for your loss, but there's not much you can do...

you are very unlikely to get -anything- from the hotel outa this one. They've been at the hotel/parking long enough to have worked the bugs out of the system as far as liability on their part.

I recommend getting into further conversation with the person in charge of the valet staff or the hotel manager himself. See if they can nail down who actually parked the car or who had key access through the night. Then ask if they have had other theft complaints when any of these same people were on duty. I was getting no where with a hotel when I had $400 cash stolen from my room during housekeeping. They gave me a credit within hours after I asked them to take an honest look at the problem. I think they realized they had a pattern and had to make good. (and get rid of the thief). They might not make good for you but the next time it happens someone else may have more success because of you.

Take it further
You should definiately take this further. Just because they write that it's not their responsibility it really still is. You're putting in charge your vehicle so it's quite easy that someone used the keys to get into your car especially if there was no sign of a break in.
A friend had his car broken into and the hotel credited him with several points and was super nice to him as he stayed there regularly.
I hope that you have some luck in getting something out of them.
BTW ask if they have survilence cameras either on the cars or in and out of the lot. DEMAND that they review them.
good luck

I'll repeat what was already stated: Don't leave valuables in your car, and I'll add, don't leave them in your room, either.
The hotel is not responsible for losses in either case. You can talk up and down all day, but in the end, you have no way of proving your valuable was where you said it was (not even if you took a photo or video; because you could have gone back afterward and removed it).
