Thumbs up Allowed to cancel a reservation after the cancellation date

I have a reservation for 7/21/13 and the cancellation policy says needs to cancel before 7/18/13 to get no charges incurred.
Now my plans changed and I did not notice the 3 day cancellation policy for this hotel as opposed to normal 4PM the day of the stay policy.
I am a platinum. Any way to cancel this with out any loss?
I have not called hotel or Marriott reservations yet.
If I can not cancel, can I modify it to a different hotel in different city on the same day?
Thanks

Moderator's note: I changed the thread title to reflect the favorable outcome. It would be nice to know which hotel did this good deed.

I'd call the hotel directly and speak with the Front Ofc or Rooms Mgr and explain your situatuin............this has been known (from personal experience) to resolve the late CXL and avoid the penalty but more then likely you'll be offered alternative dates at same hotel and NOT a credit towards another property (unless it's owned by same company)........

Actually you need to get the mod to modify the thread title. I interpreted it originally as TrojanHorse did, although your subsequent post title thread explains it a bit more.

Call the hotel directly & ask re: cancel w/ no penalty. If they say no don't get mad/blame them, as it's your responsibility to keep current with your own ressies. If they say yes, great. However, if they say no, ask if you can switch the ressie at their hotel to a future date (if you'll be back there) so they still get the revenue but you don't get the penalty.

Cheers.

There's your biggest mistake: There is no normal 4PM the day of the stay policy! It's totally up to the individual hotel, and therefore varies from hotel to hotel (and can also vary depending on time of year or with local special events), and there are hotels that have even longer than 3 day cancellation policy, and plenty of hotels that have 1 day or 2 days before.

Geesh - what's with the 'shouting'? Lighten up.

It's VERY common for hotels to have 4 or 6pm DOA cancel policies. That's more the norm than the exception. However, there are exceptions whether it be 1day, 3days, 2weeks, 60days in advance, which is why people making ressies should always note what they are so they're not caught by surprise.

To the OP - contact the hotel directly & let us know how it went.

Cheers.

I would not say that 4pm is the norm by any stretch of the imagination. i have seen cxl policies ranging from 6pm DOA to 30 days, to non-refindable at 6 months out and everything in between. I would call and plead case because you cannot lose anything, but you may just be out of the $. You will have to call hotel directly because central res will not assist in this case. Good luck and always double check cxl policy and never assume anything

Glad to hear this. Curious... Did they cancel it just as a gesture of goodwill, or did you explain you were staying in another Marriott hotel in a different city?

It would be good to know which hotel treats guests nicely like this.

The 4pm (or day of cancel) absolutely is the norm. Having anything but that definitely happens, but not more than 50%.

100% here. None of my 20 reservations have 4 PM day of arrival as the cancellation policy. The vast majority have 6 PM day of arrival, next comes a few reservations with 1 day prior to arrival, and then finally one reservation 14 days prior to arrival.

I have never seen 4pm cancellation policy. Mine have always been 6pm DOA or 1, or more, days prior to arrival and then it's according to Marriott Customer Service until midnight hotels local time.
