I've had this experience too. The fact is, if the room doesn't get paid by you, it goes somewhere else. I have had the one time exceptions made to this rule, but that's rare. Ive also had points post after calling, but rarely are nights credited. One Marriott rep I spoke to said she spends a large majority of time working through these calls as few people know about the stipulation and after a big conference, they all call in. They were excited about the Marriott property being the host PF the event, until they realize that short of a few room amenities, it doesn't make a big difference.
