Another correction, my QP88 is a NC5/135k points. I originally had an OC8 but don't think that played into it.

6k extra/night. Strange.

So was I. I'm planning on requesting the 6K back when things settle down as my reservation is not until next May.

Actually that makes a ton of sense:

Group A
New Cat 1-4 from Old Cat 1-5: QP83 - 45k value
New Cat 5 from Old Cat 7 or upgrading from NC1-4a: QPXX - 105k value
New Cat 6 from Old Cat 9 or upgrading from NC1-4a: QP99 - 165k value
New Cat 7 when upgrading from NC1-4a: QPXX - 225k value
New Cat 8 when upgrading from NC1-4a: QPXX - 285k value

Group B
New Cat 1-4 from Old Cat 6: QP80 - 75k value

Based on that it seems like there are different tables that increment by 8 as you go up categories.

I assumed based on your other post that the NC6 which cost you 30k more was a NC6 with 165k value. If so, this table makes sense and I think we could extrapolate it out. I'm going to guess that NC5 with 105k value is QP91. Could be wrong but it would fit the pattern at least

Post 6257 from Traveler56789 has a QP95 with 135K value, that is converted from an attached OC8 that was canceled with the underlying booking.
So we have TWO different QP codes both are from OC8 and both have 135K value. Skimthetrees' is QP88, but Travel56789's is QP95.

Really does not make any sense how the QP codes are generated. I cannot see any rhythm.

Instead of having to pay 90K extra, he got charged 56K only because it seemed the supervisor and the supervisor's supervisor, had a hard time to figure out the cost and to fix the mess. At the end, for once, the customer "won".

The parallel I was drawing was to the seemingly random number of extra points charged.

Does anyone know if there is a way for me to cancel my Tier 1-3 cert and get the 195k points that are owed to me?

I did exactly this tonight.

1) I called Rewards at 1-801-468-4000
2) I said "transfer points" then "something else" on the voice prompts
3) I waited for 45 minutes
4) I told the rep I wanted to cancel Cert 830P in my account (7 nights Tier 1-3 Package)
5) This is where I wasted 20 more minutes - I asked her to confirm how many points I would get back and she couldn't get an answer. When she finally came back on the line I said just go ahead and cancel and we'll see how much the system redeposits.
6) She canceled the cert and 195,000 points automatically showed up seconds later along with a confirmation email

She then transferred me to SPG rewards and I booked 3 nights at the W Bali for 180,000 pts, bringing my account back down to near zero which is where I intend to keep it!

Total math - 420,000 for Certificate minus 195K refund = 225K final cost. For those 225K points I got 120K Alaska miles and 3 nights in a Cat 7 hotel. Alaska only charges 25K for JAL PVG-NRT-KUL or SIN, which is a lot of flying in flat seat business class, and I redeemed for 3 persons. Good deal.

Similar DP as bangkokiscool, was able to cancel my OTC6 by mentioning code 870P. BTW bangkokiscool I dont think Old Tier 1-3's code is 830P? 830P is for OTC1-5

I just used what was in my confirmation email when I bought the TP:

Reward Details

  • Description: 7 Nights, Tier 1-3 Package
  • Reward certificate number: XXXXXXXX
  • Reward code: 830P
  • Valid through: Thursday, August 1, 2019
  • Total points redeemed: 420,000
  • Confirmed on: Wednesday, August 1, 2018

It seems like multiple tables that increment by 8 to me. Although I can't figure out which corresponds to which for certain values. Maybe there's a set of tables like I have (A & B) for each block of travel packages (like 120k Avios or UA falls into one set of tables, 85k SQ falls into another?)

It would make a ton of sense from a coding perspective and explain why there are multiple values for the same cert

Got it, my reward code was 870T, and I mentioned 870P (partial hotel package) to the agent

The position of the letter P is the key.

Partial OC6 is P870, not 870P which I have no clue what it is for.

Partial OC5 is P830, but the Old Tier 1-3 is 830P.

As an example, that is the confirmation of an Partial OC6 on Aug 13th.
  • Description: 7 Night Partial Package Category 6 Hotels
  • Reward code: P870
  • Valid through: Tuesday, August 13, 2019
  • Total points redeemed: 75,000
  • Confirmed on: Monday, August 13, 2018
Virgin certs have the T at the end. i.e. OTC1-5 Virgin Cert is 830T.

I was able to cancel my floater Marriott cert for the refund amount (Cat 8 - 135k) after calling several times.

The agent kept insisting the points weren’t mine to keep and I needed to book a hotel and the cert doesn’t just go away, not sure what she meant but they’re back in my account now, does that mean I’m safe and can move on and just book as needed?

Of course.

She has NO CLUE. Just ignore what she says. Things DONT work as how she understood it, or rather, not understood how things work.

The truth is, once you canceled a cert, the point value attached to the cert goes back to your account and the cert simply died, disappeared. So for those who actually want to use their certs, they have to get it back by way of getting a NC replacement. For you and others who dont need the cert, you now have the pts to book anything when you need to. That is actually the Preferred way by Marriott, as point cost is much cheaper than the 7 night hotel stay cost.
