looks like the MR jokers are playing some game. tried to transfer 33k points from a friends account to mine - they exec told me they can only do even numbers - either 30k points or 40k points. When i pressed her to do 33k points, i was put on hold and then the call was cut. happened 3 times.
Also MR to SPG points transfer is broken |

Is there a general strategy even though we aren't quite sure what will happen with Marriott TPs?
I'm debating whether to pool my spouses and my SPG/Marriott points to buy a Category 1-5 and 120K miles. We're short just 7K MR which I can top off via the SPG points buy promo which ends today. Worst case scenario? - 120K in miles (likely Alaska - although I'm hearing award space is extremely rare now especially for 2 seats) and my Category 1-5 gets converted to equivalent points of 45K MR. So effectively I traded 225,000 MR for 120K miles Middle case scenario? 120K in miles and my Category 1-5 is converted at a better rate? Say 15K per night? So I effectively traded 165,000 MR for 120K miles Best case scenario? - 120K in miles and my Category 1-5 remains effective for say Category 1-4 properties in the new program. So I effectively traded 270,000 MR for 120K miles and the ability to book a 7 night stay at a property that would otherwise cost 150,000 MR (25,000 MR * 6 since 5th night is free) Thoughts? Haven't been able to read all the pages of this thread. Your advise is appreciated! |
Given this post from William this morning (10:55 CDT a.m. on July 20), it seems highly unlikely to me that floater TP certificates are going to be converted to anything other than points in the new program. Speculation about them be converted to other kinds of certificates seems to be wrong.

Any outstanding awards for certificates with a pre-defined category (like Chase or MegaBonus promotional certificates) will be converted to a commensurate value with the new award schedule. Other floater certificates will be cancelled and converted to equivalent points, credited to the member’s account for future redemption.
If you are asking for an exact conversion amount, all we can tell you is we are currently reviewing how to handle existing travel package awards already in members' accounts that remain unattached. Members should make every effort to book and attach these certificates prior to our programs becoming one to maximize their usage as this may or may not be forthcoming before the programs merge. Anyone trying to figure out which package they should redeem for if they want to redeem for a new Cat 8 (at the Cat 7 pricing) come August? RC Tier 4-5 is a big jump in points vs 1-3, but if they convert the old certs into certs tied to a point value we probably won't be able to pay the points difference if we book a lower category of hotel.
I'm thinking of doing RC Tier 1-3 but don't want to get locked out. Any thoughts? I know there's no info, I'm asking for speculation. |
I redeemed (& attached) a Cat 9 United TP yesterday. When I did this last year I'm pretty sure United miles posted almost immediately. Curiously as well the reservation show 390K points instead of 270K points...

William has said they will be returned for points as well so seems unlikely it's anything else at this point. It is hard for me to imagine it will be at the cancellation value with zero warning though. Some poor guy who has saved points for two years redeems for a 7 night stay this month and then finds out August 1st he now has enough for three nights at a cat 3 with zero warning? I don't see that happening.
I'm still hoping for six nights worth at current rates (since 5th night is free). Worst case they decide on splitting the difference on the 1-5's and redeposit six nights worth of a cat 3 for 90,000 and then top up 30,000 per category above... ie a cat 7 stay is now worth 90,000+60,000=150,000 points. Not a perfect equivalency and tons of people will be upset, but close enough that the complains aren't over the top and forgotten about quickly enough. |

Lurker's previous 2 posts just prior to this one have made strong hint to "tell" you to attach your cert in order to maximize value. Seems to me if you cancel the reservation down the road, you MIGHT get back a commensurate cert for another hotel stay and not converted to points. Hence the emphasis on "maximize the value." But no, people would not listen to the hint. Now this is the 3rd time he said so. How much more you want when it is very clear that there would not be any definite number being announced prior to Aug 1st. |
I just redeemed a category 9 TP for now since Tier 1-3 looks like it will map to category 6. Rather get my 120K AS miles now for an EK redemption.
I highly doubt they would just give you the cancellation value. Keep in mind there are plenty of others who have ordered this package in the past year too, not just those trying to cash in this last month. Refunding the cancellation value is a slap in the face and will burn up any remaining positive sentiment people have of the merger. Those people who redeemed for a TP have an expectation to be able to book 7 nights at the categories they redeemed. I'm sure that in the end, the conversion will be reasonably fair. |
Clearly, the treatment of TP is one of complex issues that we won't get a definitive answer on until the programs merge. Either Marriott is unwilling to inform us or it hasn't yet made a final decision. Not only that, I take the Lurker's word for it that he doesn't even know what exactly would happen. We all have to make decisions based on incomplete information. I made my decision to purchase another TP this morning (it only took 5 minutes, BTW), after weighing the benefits against the potential risks. I interpret Lurker's comments more narrowly:
1) Floaters will be converted to points or point-based certificates; 2) If you know when and where you want to stay, AND the price (in terms of points) of the hotel is going up in August, you should attach your certificate to maximize its value. The second one is obvious, provided both criteria are met. For the certificate I bought this morning, the criteria aren't met, and therefore, I'll leave it floating. |
Experience with attempt to upgrade travel package
So I called in to upgrade my Cat 1-5 travel package to a Cat 8. But the representative said the cost would be 135,000 points. I expected the cost to be 90,000 points which is the difference in price between the Cat 8 (360,000) and the Cat 1-5 (270,000). She could not sell me the upgrade because the balance in my account was only 90,000. I believe the reason she quoted 135,000 points is that the value of the Cat 1-5 is 45,000. But she said they are two different transactions. If she cancels the Cat 1-5 it will take 2-3 days for the 45,000 to register. Was she handling the upgrade incorrectly or is this how others have had the process go?

Just attached a category 5 certificate to an upcoming stay in a Cape Town Protea property for 6 nights in November. Rep told me that he has to book it for 7 nights even though I am only staying for 6. He also said I would receive a partial refund after checking out early...this has to be a mistake right?
