Converting Marriott Points to Airlines

Hi All,

Two quick questions for you Marriott experts. I've got a few hundred K points that I'd like to convert to AA, and I was wondering the following:

1. Is it true that last summer Marriott offered a 1:1 conversion from points to airlines?

2. If the answer to 1 is no, are there ever any good times to convert (any special promotions)? If the answer to 1 is yes, have you heard about it being repeated?

Thanks for your help.

1: No.

2: No.

2(a): Check out the combination air/hotel rewards, which may offer a better overall value.

The thread below discusses how to extract the mileage portion out of a travel-package award:

A one to one conversion would be unheard of since marriott awards at least 10 points per dollar spent, more with elite bonuses.

you can buy 50,000 AA miles with 125,000 Marriott points however.

Assuming you spent 12,500 at Marriott to earn those points (in reality it would not have cost this much with bonuses and such) this would work out to at least 4 miles per dollar spent...not bad 50,000 / 12,500 = 4

see website:

Its not unheard of, infact its even been mentioned in FT.

http://www.flyertalk.com/pasttalk/ft...ML/000794.html

425,000 point award used to give 240K miles and a certificate which could be redeposited back to get back 212,500 points.

So 212,500 points gave 240,000 miles. This only worked if you had a large balance.

In my opinion, the best 'bang for the point' in conversion to AA miles would be one of the Complete Travel Package awards.

For 235-270K points, you get up to 120K AA miles and a week at any Marriott (non-Vacation Club) location worldwide.

Note that if miles are awarded based on destination selected, there are certain strategies that you might want to employ to maximize your miles.

I stand corrected. Thank You. Is this still possible?

I only have 4,200 points. Is there anything I can do with them?

The 083, 087, and 091 award offer what some might consider to be "1:1 conversion" to air miles. For example, for 250K MR points, you get 1 week at a Cat6 hotel + 120K air miles.

Does a week in a Cat6 Marriott sound interesting to you? Do you consider it to be worth 130,000 points? (Marriott does.) If so, then there you go - you can turn about HALF of your MR points into FF miles at 1:1, and stay in hotels with the rest of your points.

(Same concept holds true if you like Cat5 or Cat7 hotels. There's another thread on here about redepositing the hotel portion of these package awards. You can do this and get more FF miles, but you lose value as Marriott takes a chunk when you redeposit.)

Not any more after Marriott changed the award structure last year.

But the Miles+Night awards in the current awards structure are a good deal.

With respect to the combination miles/hotel awards, does Marriott allow you to request that Marriott split the miles deposit into more than one airline's FF account? (I looked through my guidebook's terms and could not find an answer to this.)

No, it is one airline only.
