Negotiate to Keep Platinum status
I will be losing my Platinum status at the end of this year and was wondering if anyone had ever been successful in getting Marriott to extend your status even though you didn't have the necessary nights.
I've been a Platinum member since '94.
Any suggestions or advice?

If you don't find a way to keep your Platinum status, Marriott might allow you to take a Platinum challenge to earn Platinum status with fewer than 75 nights in 2002. I was told that the general rule is that challenges are for those who once had a particular status, but currently fall short. Good luck.

Thinking see my post on 5 points per $ where you also asked this question. Not to worry you'll be OK

A challenge is when they will agree to an earlier UG in status, say for MR, if you'll put in, for example, 20 nights over the next 2 month period to get Marriott MR Gold status rather then the usual annual requirement!
I have not heard of them doing this for Plat status incidentally, but others may correct me if I'm wrong!

How many nights will you be short?

Oh, I'm about 72 nights short. My job changed and my travel went to zero.
I thought maybe I could sweet talk them into it by saying that I'm switching back to a travel intensive job (not true) and would be more likely to stay at Marriott if they didn't pull my status.
Sounds like my chances are slim.

Maybe you can tell them that Starwood wooed your company as their official hotel chain and comp'ed you platinum status....so you stopped staying at Marriott for the year.
They might want to see some backup, however, to prove you stayed somewhere else. Can't hurt to try!
