My experience is the exact opposite. When I fell to Gold on SPG I was shocked at how little I get. (Late check out does nothing for me so...)

Marriott works better for me because I tend to travel to towns which apparently are "beneath" Starwood's interest... (Abiliene, TX for example LOL!)

Me too. Marriott has a lot of choices/hotels available. I have had the best service experience at Hyatt.
