Behavior in the CL is no different than any other semi-public area. Obnoxious behavior is just that. I treat the CL as if it were the common living room in a big boarding house. I respect others and try to be friendly and courteous.

IMHO, this is what I think the CL is and is not:

Is Not:
A bar
A place to let your teenaged kids pig out
A place to have loud cell phone conversations
A place to hold confidential business meetings with possible competitors listening
A play room for the kids while dad is working or playing golf
Your personal computer lab

Is:
A relaxing place to have a drink and watch TV or converse at respectful levels
A place to enjoy breakfast or a snack
A meeting place with colleagues to colloborate without making others feel like they're in your office
A great place to meet interesting people
A place to escape the confines of a hotel room and chill

Also:

NOT:
A place to rearrange the furniture so you can crowd 25 people, most of whom are not guests, to have a business meeting at 7:30 am, complete with an awards ceremony where pictures are taken. (The attendant eventually got help in shooing the people out, but by then it was 8:30 am.)
Somewhere you go without shoes or wearing a somewhat open robe, sans undergarments.

Hooray! At last, someone who has hit the nail on the head. I agree with everything you say. We all have our own views on things in life but having manners and respect for others in an environment such as a concierge lounge should be common sense.

All of the above and more +3.

The robe thing is OK in some common areas in a Resort property but not in a lounge unless you run in, grab a soda or beer and go back to the room.

But not the dude who shows up in a wife-beater sleeveless and shorts, covered in sweat after his encounter with the elliptical, grabs some rowdy chow and then plops down on an upholstered chair.

To add to Is: For breakfast, a streamlined way to grab a coffee and go if that's all you need or eat something in 10 minutes w/o the seating/ordering/eat/billing/pay cycle.

Is Not: A place where you trash a table when it's crowded and leave your mess for the hostess. Just bus your table already and be cool and leave a gratuity especially when they are overworked.

I can only surmise that perhaps you don't stay at Asian Marriotts with club lounges.

Not a bar? May want to check the signs with the US based hotels as you can be sure they have liquor licenses to serve the alcohol. The CL are usually open until 11 or 12 depending on property. The one I'm staying/living at right now serves unlimited. Many, many people hang out in the lounge for several hours having drinks.

Buffett. Time to belly up. The Marriott I am at is designed for us to eat dinner every night in the lounge. It's not finger food. I've had my wife and daughter in the lounges. Some charged me, some comp'd it because of long-stay but regardless, it gives them every right to eat whatever and however much they want. Not sure where you stay but this is absolutely incorrect.

Loud cell phone conversations? I think it's time to bring things into reality. There have been studies that show why people get angry at cell phone talkers. It's not the volume, it's the fact that you only hear half the conversation;) Also puts a hole in the argument about gaining deep company secrets when you only hear 1/2 the words:p

Repeated "confidential" conversations with company info? Seriously guys, this is a red herring. At my company (like most) we have so many acronyms that are company specific you'd be lost within the first 2 minutes of the converation.

Not a personal computer lab? Hmm. Again, the places I stay have computers with free access, allows you to print, fax, copy, scan, etc.

I think some of you are whiners, plain and simple. Someone above talked about societal issues. I have to chuckle. The issue I see is many of you have no tolerance. It's the same reason why we have road rage. The most aggressive and rude people in this thread are the "silent rule makers". Go re-read the posts and see my comments compared to some of the snarky comments others have made.

And I'm going to end this by revealing a tidbit about myself. I'm completely deaf in my left ear and have moderate deafness in my right ear. Without my hearing device in my right ear I have speech issues. Guess what, depending on background noise I may speak loud. I am very cognizant of sound levels because of my hearing but with changing background noise it can be tricky for me to gauge the correct volume. However, it does not mean the world has to bend to suit me because *gasp*, I happen to sit at the table next too you so you should stop talking so I can hear the latest CNN broadcast. You may want to think twice before you just make assumptions. And if you do broach boundaries and ask someone to comply with a request, be prepared to get a response you may not like.

They're club lounges, they ain't no country clubs.;)

Sorry, in China (amongst other countries) there is no paying of gratuities......

dd992emo Nov 25, 2011 12:28 pm

Whether they are country clubs or they "ain't no" country clubs, there will always be tacky people who treat lounges like their favorite dive bar. Maybe Marriott should embrace it and have theme nights like Bowling Shirt Night, Wife Beater Night (bring your bruised and battered spouse) or Steal Our Booze By Pretending You Don't Know About The Honor Bar Night. ^

For the last time, at the Marriotts I stay there are NO honor "chits". How much do you want to wager? You opened your mouth, the question is can you admit you are wrong?

Dive bar? I'd love to see you walk into the lounge and proclaim that;) Even the manager comes up and has some drinks with the gang on nights she's not on.

I guess we should all wear suit and tie into the clubs for all meals?

Can you at least consider another POV?

You are correct, many do not. I do not. So the perspective may be different. It doesn't mean it is wrong.

Many places have a liquor license, with people who hang out for several hours having drinks, that are not bars. Mansions that cater weddings, would be one example. In the post you are quoting, I beleive the word "bar" is being used as an "attitude", not solely a place which serves alcohol. Again, different opinions, but not necessarily wrong.

Depends on where you stay. In the US, the days of "dinner in the lounge" is a lost concept...unless one is a mouse or a runway model who can survive on 2 celery sticks and a carrot. A buffet dinner may be par for where you are -but I am thinking your wife and daughter would not enjoy reading that they "belly up". Eating one's fill is of course acceptable, the poster clearly stated "pigging out", which implies something completely different. Unless of course, that is what you think your wife and daughter are doing - which I am hoping is not the case.

I am thinking that your reality is different than many here, but I will say this - it is the fact that it is annoying that is under discussion here - not reasons why people are annoyed.

Repeated "confidential" conversations with company info? Seriously guys, this is a red herring. At my company (like most) we have so many acronyms that are company specific you'd be lost within the first 2 minutes of the converation.

I am not a "guy" - but am unfortunately treated to many "confidential" conversations that are quite specific indeed, and is often rather clear that the 1/2 I cannot hear does not involve the wifey. I only wish acronyms were used. And no, I do not hang about listening, nor am I annoyed because I cannot hear the other half.

Not a personal computer lab? Hmm. Again, the places I stay have computers with free access, allows you to print, fax, copy, scan, etc.

Yes. They have them. For all to use. Not one person incessantly. Which is the definition of the word "personal" which the poster included in his description.

I think some of you are whiners, plain and simple. Someone above talked about societal issues. I have to chuckle. The issue I see is many of you have no tolerance. It's the same reason why we have road rage. The most aggressive and rude people in this thread are the "silent rule makers". I'm sorry, but I am missing the tolerance in your posts for others opinions....it seems as if the first time someone disagreed with you, your posts became acrimonius and/or sarcastic. I am not a whiner, intolerant, or aggressive. I am sure there are times I am rude, but I do not think it would be in the CL of a Marriott. Were I to be so, I would hope someone would gently let me know.

And I'm going to end this by revealing a tidbit about myself. I'm completely deaf in my left ear and have moderate deafness in my right ear. Without my hearing device in my right ear I have speech issues. Guess what, depending on background noise I may speak loud. You may want to think twice before you just make assumptions. And if you do broach boundaries and ask someone to comply with a request, be prepared to get a response you may not like.

And here is a tidbit about myself - were you to ask me, for any reason, hearing impaired or no - to lower my voice so that you could hear CNN, I would be more than happy to do so...AND apologize to you for having to ask.

They're club lounges, they ain't no country clubs.;)

Oh, we see that. Every day.

It appears your thoughts are in the minority...or at least those whom may agree with you are non-posters. You are entitled to your opinion; but accusing those who do not of being whining, intolerant, unrealistic people is, well - intolerant.

YMMV of course.

I must now return to my non acronym conversation with my boy toy
....

No lounge charges ever for us for spouse and kid(s) staying in plat's room. Short stay long stay whatever, there's no reason this would be a charge.

I think this is because some of those times I may have been silver now that I think about it. The last two years have been a blur.......

Now I make sure I fly home instead of them visiting:D
