Timeframe to calculate elite levels

I've been with Marriott Rewards for 12 years (easy gold, sometimes plat), and I clearly am clueless.

I just missed plat this year, so I asked if there was anything I could do to retain it for 2010. I was told that plat is computed on a rolling 12 month period (see below). So, does that mean if I ever get to 75 during any 12 month period, I'm plat through the end of that year?

It is true that attempts to renew the Platinum Elite level operates on a fixed calendar year from January 1 to December 31 each year.

However, attempts to achieve the Gold and Platinum Elite levels operate on a form of rolling calendar.

Once every week, our computer systems check your Elite nights for the last twelve months. If you have enough Elite nights in that period, you are upgraded to the Platinum Elite level.

What this means is that even should you be downgraded this coming February due to an inability to renew normally, the rolling calendar will take over within one week and will begin counting up your nights in the last twelve months.

As soon as our systems found that you had 75 nights in the last twelve months, your account would be upgraded back to the Platinum Elite status level.

No it means if you get 75 nights during 2010 you will have Plat status at least through February 28, 2011, and most likely February 29, 2012. (Vague memory recalls someone posting that if you do the rolling qualification in the first two months of the year, it is only through Feb of the next year - others with actual experience may be able to provide more details, or contradictions to my recollection, from their actual experiences).

The rolling 12 months does not work for elite status renewal, only advancing to the next level.

  • The 12-month rolling calendar is used when reaching a higher elite level, which seems to be your case. Once you reach a specific elite level and like to maintain this level you need to have the appropriate number of nights within one calendar year.
  • Upon request, MR sometimes either extend your status or offers a fast track promotion to reinstate your Platinum status.
  • For 2009 MR offered a Buy Back Your Marriott Rewards Elite Status option for 40/25/7.5K MR points (Platinum/Gold/Silver). It might be possible that a similar offer will be announced.

Hmmm. I'll read the other posting to see if I can figure this out.

I was plat in 2009, but only stayed 69 nights in 2009. So I was attempting to maintain that level. I guess now that I have "lost" that level, it goes to a rolling 12 months, and I can regain it.

Thanks for the help.

You should still be Plat through Feb 28. Sign into your MR account and check to see what your elite status is.

Have you been Plat for multiple years? If so they may well renew you at Plat come Mar 1 as they did for me 3 times, when I had 73, 61 and 70 nights.

I'm still plat and will be through feb, but I didn't get the magic 75 in 2009 to renew.

I've only been plat for one year, and it was just barely. They may be kind, but I'm likely to pick up six more nights before I lose nights from a rolling 12 months.

Pay attention to post #23 from Marriott Concierge in the thread at the link I provided in my previous post. You need to drop to Gold (March 1, 2010 if they don't renew you at Plat) before you can use the rolling 12 months to once again attain Plat. So hopefully most of last year's stays were in the last 10 months, and your drop to Gold will be short lived.

You still might get it re-newed for another year. I only had 61 nights in 2009 and got a card in mail yesterday saying I am Platinum till 02/2011.

I might cut it close this year to get my 50 nights ... how will Marriott handle the following:

Dec. 21 --> Jan. 3 stay. Do 11 nights count as 2010 and 2 nights as 2011? All of them as 2010 or 2011? None of them count for anything?

Can't split it up since this is a 12+ night promo rate.

I ended up 48 night last year as a silver and planned that way so I could rollover 38 night and make PLAT this year easy....However, they just gave me Gold and didn't rollover any nights....I wasn't too pleased.

I called in and told them I was given Gold by mistake and they said since I was close, and there was no bonus night or free nights in my nights they gave it too me.

They said if I wanted to call back later this year after I stayed enough night sthat I would qualifly for PLAT with the rollover I planned they would consider granting it too me...which reminds me I need to make that call soon as i'm getting close...
