Yes, some properties do carry them.

No, I've been told I can not "charge" them to my room to get the MR points.

Yes, if you charge them to your CC you should get points for their purchase and it should show as a Marriott charge for the extra points there.

Now all of this presumes the property processes the purchase properly, so as always YMMV.

I am almost positive that they can be added on to any guest room bill and paid for just like anything else on the room bill. Whether or not you would get points for this would be up to Marriott Rewards.

Also, I am pretty sure it is possible to potentially purchase these with points, but it definitely wouldn't be cost effective. Every $10 is 5,000 points to cover folio items with points at the desk.

I have tried many times to purchase the gift cards at hotels and have never been successful charging them to the room. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, the apparently come from the sales/accounting office and not really from the front desk (even if they are physically there).

Were you successful in getting points for money spent at hotels when you purchased them through the sales/accounting office?

joepercussion1 Jan 13, 2013 5:09 pm

This seems like it would be something that varies from hotel to hotel. Most hotels I have encountered sell them through the front desk exclusively. From what I know and from personal experience, I have been able to have one added to a room bill, and successfully gotten points for one.

Literally never for me but obviously YMMV.

Is it worth it? If you buy the GCs online, you get 10% bonus + cash back which give more discount than adding it into your room bill.

you can charge them to the room however gift cards will not be counted as incidental purchases

This is what I guess too - if you get points for adding a GC into the room bill and get 10 pts/$ then there is no need to wait a year to get the GC during the holidays promo.

Thanks Socrates for clarifying!

I usually use Bigcrumbs for marriott gc purchases since they give 3.5% back and occasionally have deals with higher amounts. From what I understand its one of the few (if any) places that you get cash back for a Marriott gift card purchase.

You can 'double dip' with the gc and reservation through there also.

You can use the below link for a signup referral if you're interested

Do you get reward points if you pay with a Marriott gift card?

Do you get Marriott reward points if you pay for your entire stay with a Marriott gift card? I looked at the Marriott gift card terms and conditions, but didn't see this addressed anywhere.

Thanks!
