I have been using eGiftCards the past couple of weeks and have figured out a foolproof process. Thought I'd share....
  • Purchase the eGiftCard for the estimated amount of the stay at least four days prior to arriving at the hotel. It will be emailed within one day.
  • Call the hotel after you have received the eGiftCard and ask if they will accept it. Whoever answers the phone is likely to say they have never heard of such a thing and will need to check with their manager. You will be asked to email the card to the person on the phone.
  • One day later, you will receive confirmation from the hotel that the card will be accepted, with an apology for the hotel having to research this. Apparently, the communications from MI on the eGiftCard wasn't something any of the hotels either saw or read.
  • Usually, IME, the hotel will go ahead an apply the eGiftCard at that point, so when you check in, your credit card will only be swiped for incidentals, without the larger hold. (I have been checking this just for my own curiosity.)
  • Print the eGiftCard email and the email from the hotel to take with you for check-in. IME, when the eGiftCard has already been applied, you will not have to actually present this, as the hotel had the copy from the email.
  • If the hotel did not apply the eGiftCard before check-in, ask for it to be applied at check-in. If there is any issue, it can be dealt with during your stay. Doing it this way results in a hold on your credit card for the room rate and incidentals, IME.
  • Stop by the registration desk the night before or on your way out of the hotel to ensure everything was credited properly. IME, when the card was applied prior to the stay, there are no hitches. When the card is supposed to be applied at check-in, you may have to get them to actually apply the card before leaving.
It's taken some doing to get a smooth process, but the 10x points is worth it!

Are you actually getting 10x points for eGiftCard purchases? Per the T&C, I was under the impression that eGCs are not eligible for any bonuses/promos...

There is a promo through the end of the month (Dec) for 10x bonus points when purchasing a GiftCard, for which eGiftCards are included. (Maximum $2,000 spend on GiftCards) I'm not sure if the promo was targeted. By entering your MR# in the promo field, you get the bonus points.

Consider a $200 stay.

Without the eGift Card, as Plat:
  • Points for stay: 2,000
  • Plat 50% bonus: 1,000
  • Welcome Gift: 500
  • Marriott Visa: 1,000
  • Total Points: 4,500

With the eGiftCard, as a Plat, using Marriott Visa to purchase eGift Card, you get an additional 2,000 points for a total of 6,500. Not bad for a $200 stay! Put another way, it creates 20,000 extra points if you launder your Marriott payments through GiftCards!

Here is the confirmation from Marriott for one of my eGiftCard purchases:

Today, the points from purchasing my eGiftCards posted to my MR Account. The purchase was treated as a Marriott purchase, receiving 5x points per dollar spent.

A $200 FS stay paid for with the eGiftCard that was charged to a Marriott Visa and purchased during the promo period nets 6,500 points.
- Points for stay: 2,000
- Plat 50% bonus: 1,000
- Welcome Gift: 500
- eGiftCard Bonus: 2,000
- Marriott Visa: 1,000
This is 2,000 more than without the eGiftCard.

Ordered $110 gift card, received only $100.

Before the end of last year, I used the AMT promo code and order a $100 gift card + 10% bonus = $110. Everything went fine. Even the final confirmation page shows $110 will be loaded to the card.

Now that I received the card, there's a slip that says "Gift Card Value: $110", but when I check the balance of the card on Marriott website, it says value is only $100. What's going on?

Why not ask Marriott that question?

Give it a few days to credit the extra 10%. This is normal according to Marriott. I ordered $1K gift cards a few weeks ago and had the same problem. I checked immediately when I got them and it says $1000 online and on the small business card sized slip. After a short while (forgot if it was a day or so or maybe more), it showed the extra $100 online for me.

OTOH, mine arrived, twice, with the correct amount loaded when I registered on gifts.marriott.com. Hope gk17 has your answer...

The website is showing the correct amount now.

Buy Marriott gift cards at hotel

I was wondering if individual hotels sold Marriott gift cards? Also, if those were added onto your bill would you receive points for the purchase?

BKKLEE Jan 12, 2013 5:20 pm

to question 1, don't think so...........which negates question 2......

Hmmm, I'm in a RI right now that has a sign at the front desk offering gift cards for sale. Not sure if they would include any bonuses, but you must get the cc points if you use the MR card to purchase them. Stay points would come when you used the gift card to pay for a stay.
